Technology 271 preparing for the appropriate Water Treatment Operator and Water Distribution Certification examinations given by the California State Health Department and A.W.W.A., respectively. (AVC) TECH 112 WATER UTILITIES PRACTICES (formerly TECH 82) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 111, and Eligibility for ENGL 100, READ 099 and MATH 102. Study of the general principles and practices of the use of hydraulics and other sciences in the broad field of public water supply. (AVC) TECH 113 *WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL I (formerly TECH 83) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100, READ 099 and MATH 100. An introduction to wastewater treatment and disposal. Topics covered include: the characteristics of wastewater; sources and quantities of wastewater; individual sewage treatment and disposal systems; pretreatment, primary treatment, secondary treatment and effluent polishing. Emphasis is given to solving problems of the type encountered on Operator Certification examinations. (AVC) TECH 114 *WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL II (formerly TECH 84) 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of TECH 113. Additional emphasis on process control, trouble shooting and wastewater mathematics and formula manipulations which may be encountered on State certification exam. Topics covered include: individual sewage treatment and disposal systems and methods, pretreatment, primary treatment, secondary treatment, solids handlings, chemical applications and effluent polishing. (AVC) TECH 115 *WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL III (formerly TECH 85) 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of TECH 114. Advisory: Three years experience in a wastewater treatment plant. Special emphasis on how to deal with essay questions encountered on the Grade IV and V State certification exams. Also covered; process control, troubleshooting, wastewater mathematics and formula manipulations for individual treatment and disposal systems consisting of primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment process. (AVC) TECH 120 *FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRICITY (formerly TECH 50) 4 units 6 hours weekly (3 hours lecture, 3 hours lab) Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100, READ 099, and MATH 100. Basic concepts of electricity with emphasis on the fundamental laws of electricity and magnetism and the practical application of those laws. Experimental verification and these laws with laboratory practice to support the theory. The student will be provided a foundation in electricity for vocational areas; including electronics, electrical, auto, appliance repair, refrigeration and air conditioning. (AVC, 2+2) TECH 121 ELECTRICAL CODES AND ORDINANCES (formerly TECH 51R2) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 120, 122, and 123, and Eligibility for ENGL 100, READ 099 and MATH 100. Familiarization with Electrical Codes in use in California including technical requirements, governing bodies, and enforcement. Emphasis on updating and interpretation. (AVC) (R1) TECH 122 *INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRICAL WIRING (formerly TECH 52) 2 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 120, and Eligibility for ENGL 100, READ 099 and MATH 100. Build a foundation of knowledge and skills needed to maintain or modify the electrical system in a residence. Close adherence to the National Electrical Code will be observed, resulting in safe wiring practices. The ability to secure permits and pass electrical inspection will be observed by the instructor. Basic formulas necessary to understand electrical theory and applications are presented as they are needed throughout the class. Class designed to teach the home-owner how to repair wiring problems in the home, and to do simple wiring jobs and installations. (AVC) TECH 123 *PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS TO THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE-RESIDENTIAL (formerly TECH 53A, Electrical Wiring- Residential) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 120, 122, and Eligibility for ENGL 100, READ 099 and MATH 100. This course will use a residential setting to teach code requirements. The class will cover 50% of the National Electrical Code and will build on the students foundation of knowledge and skills to maintain or modify the electrical system in a residence. Close adherence to the National Electrical Code will be observed, resulting in safe wiring practices. Basic formulas necessary to understand electrical theory and applications are presented as they are needed throughout the class. (AVC)
