Page 276 of Antelope Valley College 1999-2000 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California274 Theatre Arts Prerequisite Completion If a course is listed as a prerequisite for another course, that prerequisite course must be completed with a satisfactory grade in order to enroll in the next course. According to the California Education Code [55200 (d)] a satisfactory grade is a grade of A," B, C, or CR . ATTENTION New Course Numbers Effective with the 1999-2000 academic year, AVC has adopted a new course numbering system. Former course numbers appear in parentheses after the new course numbers. A guide can be found on Pages 58-68 that provides an explanation of the new course numbering system along with an alphabetical list for converting former course numbers to new numbers. Theatre Arts Courses THA 101 *THEATRE APPRECIATION (formerly TH A1) 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 100. Advisory: Eligibility for READ 099. A broad-based introduction to the various elements of theatre including interpretation of plays, understanding of the various elements of a play in production, and survey of theatre history and the development of the dramatic form. Play readings are supplemented by discussions and audiovisual aids to increase the students understanding of the play in performance. (CSU, UC, AVC) THA 102 *INTRODUCTION TO STAGECRAFT (formerly TH A 2R2) 3 units 2 hours lecture weekly 48 hours total laboratory Course Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MATH 050. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 100 or satisfactory completion of ENGL 101. A broad based introduction to the various elements of technical theatre. Included are a survey of the history of the physical theatre in various cultures, and organization of the modern technical theatre. Also included is an introduction to the various materials and methods and decision making procedures used in creating and moving scenery, property acquisition and construction, fundamentals of electricity, and equipment used in lighting the stage. The understanding of these technical elements is incorporated with an introduction to the basic elements of scenic and lighting design to allow the student to develop an aesthetic under-standing and an ability to make value judgments regarding the design of theatrical productions. (CSU, UC, AVC) (R1) THA 105 *INTRODUCTION TO LIGHTING DESIGN (formerly TH A 11R2) 3 units 2 hours lecture weekly 48 hours total laboratory Course Prerequisite: Completion of THA 102. Course Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MATH 050. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 100 or satisfactory completion of ENGL 101. A broad based introduction to lighting design, including a review of lighting in stagecraft, the functions of stage light, the design process, script analysis, designing for the proscenium stage, thrust and arena, the light plot, schedules, different control boards, and variations in lighting for different theatrical forms. (CSU, UC, AVC) (R1) TM 110 *FUNDAMENTALS OF ACTING (formerly TH A 5R2, Acting Fundamentals) 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. Introduction to acting, including play analysis, theory of acting, and improvisation, theatre games, and sense exercises-an overview of various techniques and theories used in actor training. Students gain an ability to analyze a play from an actors standpoint including the fundamentals of play structure and basic elements of theatre. Students learn the fundamentals of Stanislavskis theories and other contemporary acting theories. The course culminates in the presentation of a scene study supported by formal analysis of the text and a beat analysis for the scene. (CSU, UC, AVC) (R1) THA 113 *VOICE AND MOVEMENT FOR THE ACTOR (formerly 7R2) 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 097 and READ 097. This course will help the student gain a working knowledge of the physical and vocal demands required of the stage actor. They will also gain a working knowledge of the their own physical and vocal instruments and how these tools are developed and utilized on the stage. Students will learn about vocal diction, breath control and physical dexterity. Ultimately the student will learn how to communicate a character with properly developed tools-the voice and body.
