Health Information Technology Program The Health Information Technology (HIT) program will prepare students for positions in Health Information/Medical Records departments in health care facilities. Responsibilities typically include: compiling, analyzing, and evaluating health information, maintaining and using health data, controlling the use and release of health information, and supervising staff. Graduates of this program will be granted an Associate in Science Degree in Health Information Technology. Pending program accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in cooperation with the professional association AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association), a graduate may take the national certifying exam to become an Accredited Record Technician. Admission to the Program Applicants to the program must attend an information session, held at one of several colleges in the region. Information packets and registration information are available from the Counseling Center. College Requirements Students interested in an AS. Degree need to complete the associate degree requirements. (See Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements.) Planning a Program of Study This program is provided in a distance learning format with courses offered by Santa Barbara. City College and Moorpark College. The core elements of each of the HIT lecture courses will include successful completion of the course objectives using textbooks, study guides, audio tapes, videotapes, and computer software (HIT 200, HIT 210, HIT 250). All students must attend an orientation for the first class session of each course. Regional study groups will meet weekly, based upon a mutually convenient time/location of the majority of the group members. A student facilitator, selected by each group, will lead/moderate discussion sessions, in which course content, exercises and assignments will be discussed. Discussion sessions and test review sessions will be conducted by the course instructor at Santa Barbara City College prior to midterm and final examinations. Examinations will be provided at your local community college. Practical experiences will be provided at facilities as close to your residence as possible, under the guidance of a clinical preceptor.
