226 Nursing http://www.avc.edu (661) 722-6300 Definition Nursing is an art and science incorporating knowledge from behavioral, biological and physical sciences. It is based on holistic concept of health in which the physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, social and spiritual aspects of human functioning are interrelated, interdependent and of equal importance. An Associate Degree Nursing program, a Vocational Nursing program, and a Nurse Aide course and a Home Health Aide course are offered. Career Options Home Health Aide Licensed Vocational Nurse Nurse Aide Registered Nurse Certificate Program Vocational Nursing The three semester Vocational Nursing curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for the California State Board of Vocational Nurse Examination. Students need to be admitted to the nursing program in order to enroll in the nursing classes. Written information is available in the Allied Health Division. Students completing the Vocational Nursing certificate program are eligible to receive an associate in science degree provided all degree requirements are satisfied. Some courses in the certificate program can be used to satisfy general education requirements. The program is accredited by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Graduates receive certificate of achievement from the College and are recommended as qualified for the State Board Examination. Students must maintain a minimum grade of C in each required course to progress and graduate. A minimum grade of C in clinical practical and theory is mandatory. The Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians may deny licensure to individuals who have been convicted of a felony. Any individual seeking admission to the nursing program who has such a conviction is advised to contact the Board to ascertain their status prior to seeking admission. The Board may be contacted by writing or calling: Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians 2535 Capitol Oaks Drive, Suite 205 Sacramento, CA 95833 (916) 263-7800 Students have supervised day and evening clinical experiences in local accredited hospitals and health agencies in each of the three semesters. Students may be given transfer credit for related previous education completed within the last five years. These include nursing courses, psychiatric technician courses and certified nurse aide courses. Credit shall be determined by written and/ or practical examinations. Certified Nurse Aides may receive 120 hours advanced standing in the program, based on a written and/or practical exam. Students purchase textbooks, uniforms, course syllabi, health services, and malpractice insurance. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation. Current cost sheets are included with the acceptance letters. All applicants must be in satisfactory health, which will permit the performance o f student n u r s i n g d u t i e s a n d responsibilities. This means students shall be free of any physical disabilities or emotional problems which would interfere with normal progress in learning and accepting the usual duties and responsibilities of a student nurse. This includes no dependency on drugs or alcohol. Students not meeting these requirements are advised to consider other careers. Applicants who are pregnant are advised not to seek enrollment until after an appropriate postpartum period. If pregnancy should occur during the program, a physicians written approval to continue in the program, and through the postpartum period, without restriction, will be required. The student must be under medical supervision during the pregnancy and through the postpartum period. The student must be able to participate in all learning experiences. A student who becomes ill during the program, upon request of the faculty, will obtain a written statement from the physician clarifying the medical status and ability to participate in the program. Attendance is mandatory in this program. Regardless of the reason for absence or tardiness, if the faculty decides that progress in the program has been hindered, dismissal may be requested from the program. Continuous progress is assured from one nursing course to the next, providing the student stays in continuous attendance.
