Review the matriculation regulations of the California Community Colleges and exemption criteria developed by the District and file a complaint when he/she believes the College has engaged in any practice prohibited by these regulations. The regulations are available and complaints may be filed with the DirectorDean of Counseling Services. Special Accommodations Alternative matriculation services are available for students who require special accommodations in the educational setting: 1. Students with physical, visual, communication or learning disabilities are advised to contact the Office of Disabled Students Programs and Services. 2. Students who speak English as their second language may contact the Language Arts Division or the Office of Counseling Services. Exemptions Students can be exempt from participating in matriculation activities based on the following criteria. Students who are exempt may choose whether or not to participate. Students may request to be exempt from part or all of the matriculation components by filing a Matriculation Waiver form with the DirectorDean of Counseling Services. Orientation Exemptions a. Students who have completed an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university. b. Students who enroll in less than 12 units and have one of the following education goals: 1. Advance in current job/career 2. Maintain a certificate or license 3. Educational development (intellec- (upgrade job skills) (e.g., nursing, real estate) tual, cultural, recreational) c. Students who are matriculated at another college or university and are attending AVC concurrently. Assessment Exemptions a. Students who have completed an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university. b. Students who enroll only in courses that have no prerequisites, corequisites, or advisories on recommended prep- aration (unless the student is K-12). c. See below for alternative assessment for writing placement, reading placement, mathematics placement, and English as a second language placement. Placement Testing Alternatives Students may be excused from taking English and/or mathematics placement test(s) by providing proof (e.g., transcripts, test result reports, etc.) of one of the following: Writing a. College Board Advanced Placement English Test score of 3 or higher (results in credit for ENGL 101 or ENGL 101, 102 depending on exam taken). b. Completion of writing courses at other accredited colleges or universities. c. Completion of ACT Compass writing placement tests at other California Community Colleges. Placement tests other than the College Board are not valid at AVC. d. Passing of the CSU English Equiv- alency Exam (results in credit for ENGL 101, 102). Reading a. Completion of reading courses at other accredited colleges or universities. b. Completion of ACT Compass reading placement tests at other California Community Colleges. Placement tests other than the ACT Compass are not valid at AVC. Mathematics a. College Board Advanced Placement Calculus Test score of 3 or higher (results in credit for MATH 150 or MATH 150, 160 depending on test taken). b. Completion of mathematics courses at other accredited colleges or universities. c. Completion of the ACT Compass placement tests at other California Community Colleges. Placement tests other than ACT Compass tests are not valid at AVC. English as a Second Language a. Completion of ESL courses at other colleges or universities. b. Assessment Writing, Reading, and Math Placement Exams The writing, reading, and math placement exams are intended to assess your language and computation skills. The scores from these exams along with additional criteria result in placement recommendations for writing, reading, and math courses. These placement recommendations will assist you in selecting courses that are sensible and realistic based on your background and skills levels. Additionally, several courses across the curriculum carry enrollment conditions that are stated in terms of placement recommendations from our assessment.[close] |
