Critical reading and thinking skills are crucial for the development of the educated person and for success in college. Additionally, most forms of employment require the ability to read; an individual needs to be able to evaluate many written materials encountered in todays society. The most basic level course focuses on vocabulary development and compre- hension of the main idea and major and minor supporting details. The more advanced level course expands study to include critical evaluation of written texts and study skills necessary for success in other college courses. Speed Reading also provides extensive instruction and practice in comprehension, rate improvement, and study skills. Distinctive Features Students enrolled in Reading classes are pretested to ensure their placement at the level best suited to their abilities and needs. Individualized plans are developed for the students in the basic Reading courses (READ 097 and READ 099) to increase the effectiveness of the program. At the end of the Reading courses post tests are given to assess growth and to measure the students readiness to proceed to the next level of the instructional sequence. Career Options Reading is essential to success in most careers. Certificate Program Certificate not applicable. Associate Degree Associate degree not available. Transfer Not a transfer major. Prerequisite Completion If a course is listed as a prerequisite for another course, that prerequisite course must be completed with a satisfactory grade in order to enroll in the next course. According to the California Education Code [55200 (d)] a satisfactory grade is a grade of A, B, C, or "CR" Reading Courses READ 097 *INTERMEDIATE READING 34 units 3-4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for READ 097. Development of reading skills which are interrelated and combine to produce a competent reader. Major areas covered include comprehension, vocabulary development, rate, and study skills. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) (R1) READ 098 *READINGS OF CURRENT EVENTS 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 099 and READ 099. This course is a developmental skills level course that is designed to provide reading and instruction related to current events in the areas of politics, philosophy, health, the environment, and other topics relating to modern life, etc. It is designed to give students an awareness of current trends in modern society while building analytical skills. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) (R1) READ 099 *CRITICAL READING AND STUDY SKILLS 34 units 34 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for READ 099. Development of critical reading skills; reading and thinking for research purposes; vocabulary building; rate improvement; literary comprehension; study skills related to reading.
