It aims to provide specific techniques and sug- gestions for handling the most challenging aspects of fostering. Recommended for preschool and elementary teachers and administrators, professionals and para- professionals who work with foster children, day care and children's center personnel, pediatric workers, foster parents and others interested in surrogate parenting, and students pursuing the certificate in Child and Family Education. (AVC) (R1) CFE 161 *FOSTER PARENTING INFANCY THROUGH PREADOLESCENCE 1 unit 18 hours total A course designed to develop an aware- ness of the dynamics of the parent-child relationship as it applies to foster parenting. Focus is on the emotional, social and physical maturation processes as they apply to the unique nature of the parenting experience. Communication and relationships within the family are studied as well as the interaction between the natural family and the foster family. (AVC) (R1) CFE 163 *FOSTER PARENTING THE ADOLESCENT CHILD 1 unit 18 hours total A course designed to develop an understanding of the adolescent child in a foster home. It aims to provide specific techniques and suggestions for han- dling the most challenging aspects of fostering. (AVC) (R1) CFE 165 *FOSTERING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS I unit 18 hours total This course is designed to increase awareness of the dynamics of the foster parent-child relationship with respect to children with special problems. The course will focus on coping behaviors, com-munication, and interrelationships between child, natural family, and foster family. (AVC) (R1) CFE 166 *FOSTERING THE BATTERED AND ABUSED CHILD I unit 18 hours total This course is designed to provide specific knowledge and techniques involved in the most challenging aspects of fostering children. Issues addressed will be pertinent to foster parenting battered and abused children. (AVC) (R1) CFE 167 *FOSTERING THE EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED CHILD 1 unit 18 hours total A minicourse in the Foster Parent Program, designed to provide specific knowledge and techniques, and suggestions involved in the most challenging aspects of fostering children. Issues addressed will be pertinent to foster parenting emotionally disturbed children. (AVC) (R1) ACTING-OUT AND CFE 168 *FOSTER PARENTING THE MEDICALLY FRAGILE CHILD 1 unit 16 hours total This course is designed to provide the initial training required by the foster care licensing agencies to provide care for children with special medical needs. Topics will include an overview of medical foster care, community resources and services available (CA Children's Services, Regional Center, WIC, Hospice, Headstart, Organizational Support Groups for SIDS, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, AIDS, Asthma, etc.), working with the medical placement unit and special skills, health issues and concerns for medical care providers. (AVC) (R1) CFE 169 *FOSTER PARENTING THE EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED SERVICE TRAINING 1 unit 18 hours total Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 101 or satisfactory completion of ENGL 101. This course is designed for licensed foster parents and kinship caregivers who may provide care for children exhibiting severe emotional and/or behavioral disturbances. Topics will include the definition of a severe emotionally and/or behaviorally disturbed child, dynamics of the foster family, an overview of typical and atypical child development, behavior manage- ment, and information on professional intervention, special education services, community resources, and current licensing regulations. This course meets the initial training requirements for certified D Rate caregivers in Los Angeles County. (AVC) CHILD-D RATE PRE- CFE 173 *INDEPENDENT LIVING PROGRAM FOR FOSTER PARENTS: EMPLOYABILITY 1 unit 17.5 hours total A minicourse based upon an adaptation of the PUSH Eastern Michigan University and MAPP curriculum. It is designed to help foster parents and concerned others to understand the various attitudes and barriers youths face in getting a job and making realistic job choices.
