Computer Applications, Computer Networking and Computer Information Science 119 Definition The study of computerized systems is an area of significant importance in our society. Computer applications, computer networking and computer information science are exciting, changing fields, attracting people who enjoy challenges. The objectives of these programs are to provide a deeper comprehension of this vital area and to enable students to obtain the skills necessary for careers in computer related fields or to prepare for further study at the university level. The Computer Applications program concentrates on the applications of microcomputers in the areas of electronic spreadsheets, database management, word processing, networks, Internet and operating systems. The Computer Networking Certificate is a two- step program that allows students to initially enter the computer networking field with the essential knowledge needed to succeed, while providing the opportunity to expand their knowledge of more advanced networking classes and exposing them to several additional network operating systems. In the Computer Software Developer Program students are given a combination of the theory of software design along with hands -on involvement in writing, testing and debugging their programs. A solid foundation in several popular computer languages is developed along with the analysis of generalized computer algorithms. Distinctive Features Most of the computer courses provide class time to work on the computers. Open computer lab times are available for computer students who may not have access to the required equipment or software. Four distinct computer certificates are available to students. Certificate Programs Computer Applications This certificate requires a minimum of 3 1 units. Students must have a C or better in all course work used to qualify for any of the three computer certificates. A maximum of 9 credit/no credit units will be accepted for any of these certificates. A minimum of 9 units of certificate course work must be completed at AVC. (Credit earned by examination will not be included in these 9 units.)
