Page 130 of Antelope Valley College 2004-2005 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California128 Computer Applications, Computer Networking and Computer Information Science CIS 123 *ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE AND COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CIS 111, and Eligibility for ENGL 099, READ 099 and MATH 102. Introduction to assembly language programming and computer architecture taught in a hands -on environment using IBM-compatible computers with MS- DOS operating system. Topics include assembly language for Intel micro- processors, microcomputer architecture, the Intel machine instruction set, number systems, use of the macro assembler program development environment, and techniques for representing data structures in assembly language. BEFORE ENROLLING students should have a working knowledge of PCs and the DOS operating system. They should be proficient in writing programs in a high-level language such as Basic, Java, Pascal, Fortran, or C. Structure of BASIC (Beginners All- Purpose Symbolic Instructional Code) programming language, syntax, coding, program logic, and program testing. Writing programs to solve problems. (Engineering and science majors consult counselors) [CAN CSCI 6] (CSU, UC, AVC, 2+2) CIS 143 *INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMING 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 099, READ 099 and MATH 102, and Completion of CIS 141. Students will learn the fundamentals of Microsoft Windows programming using the Visual BASIC language. The course will include designing, implementing and testing Visual BASIC programs which will provide useful Windows applications to solve representative problems for business, science, mathematics, and engineering. This course is intended for students majoring in business or CIS. (CSU, UC, AVC) CIS 144 *ADVANCED VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMING 3 units 4 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of CIS 143. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 099, READ 099, and MATH 102. Students will learn advanced topics of Visual BASIC programming in Microsoft Windows, including database appli- cations, object-oriented programming, and advanced controls. The course will include designing, implementing and testing Visual BASIC programs which will provide useful Windows applications to solve representative problems for business, science, mathematics, and engineering. This course is intended for students majoring in business or CIS or those desiring to upgrade their programming skills. This course will help prepare for the Designing and Implementing Desktop Applications with Microsoft Visual BASIC 6.0 (70-176) certification exam. (CSU, AVC) CIS 145 *INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL BASIC.NET PROGRAMMING 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CIS 141 and ei- ther CIS 111 or CIS 173 or CIS 175, and Eligibility for ENGL 099, READ 099 and MATH 102. Students will learn the fundamentals of Microsoft Windows programming using the Visual BASIC.NET programming language. The course will include designing, implementing and testing Visual BASIC.NET programs, which will provide useful Windows applications to solve representative problems for business, science, mathematics, and engineering. This course is intended for students majoring in business or CIS or those desiring to increase their programming skills. (CSU, AVC) CIS 157 *INTRODUCTION TO UNIX 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CA 103 or CA 221 or CIS 101, and Eligibility for ENGL 099, READ 099 and MATH 102. This hands -on practical course presents the basics of the UNIX operating system. It will focus on UNIX fundamentals includ- ing: text processing, vi editing, system administration and security, and shell programming.
