197 A college level, transferable course which provides training in the grammar, vocabulary and reading of ancient Attic Greek. Students will be able to distinguish Greek grammatical structures and analyze their relevance to English grammar, to demonstrate a working knowledge of Greek vocabulary, to translate passages of simple Greek with the aid of a dictionary, and to recognize the Greek stems of English words and thereby determine general parameters of meaning. It enriches students lives by introducing them to one of the most important languages and literatures in the Western tradition. It is especially appropriate for students in the humanities, philosophy, history, and literature, and to those considering careers in medicine or law. (CSU, UC, AVC) Hebrew Course HEBR 101 *ELEMENTARY BIBLICAL HEBREW 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101. The course is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of Biblical Hebrew, including phonetics and grammatical structure. Emphasis will be placed on developing the ability to translate passages from various books of the Bible into fluent English, and the abil ity to read aloud the Biblical text. (CSU, UC, AVC) Japanese Courses JAPN 101 *ELEMENTARY JAPANESE 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101. This course is designed to provide the beginning student with a working knowledge of elementary Japanese, including phonetic and grammatical structures. Emphasis will be placed on speaking, listening, writing, and reading the two Japanese syllabic systems (Kana), plus the introduction of Chinese characters (Kanji). [CAN JAPN 2] (CSU, UC, AVC) JAPN 102 *ELEMENTARY JAPANESE 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of JAPN 101. This course is designed to provide the continuing beginning student with a working knowledge of elementary Japanese, including phonetic and grammatical structures. Emphasis will be placed on speaking, listening, writing, and reading in Japanese syllabary and the introduction to more Chinese characters (Kanji). [CAN JAPN 4] (CSU, UC, AVC) Latin Courses LATN 101 *ELEMENTARY LATIN 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101. A transfer-level, foundation course in Latin, including a survey of Greek and Roman civilization, with particular emphasis upon the relationship of Latin to the vocabulary, spelling, and grammar of modern English and the modern Romance languages. (CSU, UC, AVC) LATN 102 *ELEMENTARY LATIN 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of LATN 101. A transfer-level, foundation course in Latin, including a survey of Greek and Roman civilization, with particular emphasis upon the relationship of Latin to the vocabulary, spelling, and grammar of modern English and the modern Romance languages. (CSU, UC, AVC) LATN 201 *INTERMEDIATE LATIN 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of LATN 102. An intermediate level course in Latin, continuing the concepts introduced in LATN 101 and 102. In addition to intensive study of Latin grammar and syntax, the student will be introduced to readings from a wide variety of Roman and Medieval authors, with special emphasis on Vergils The Aeneid. (CSU, UC, AVC) Russian Courses RUSS 101 *ELEMENTARY RUSSIAN 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101. This course is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the Russian language, including phonetics and grammatical structure. Emphasis will be placed on developing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Students will also be introduced to elements of Russian history and culture. (CSU, UC, AVC) RUSS 102 *ELEMENTARY RUSSIAN 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of RUSS 101. A course designed to provide students with an extended and more comprehensive understanding of the Russian language. Emphasis will be placed on refining funda mental Russian language skills, including phonetics and grammatical structure.
