Page 57 of Africa by Audley Travellioness in the grass wildlife tanzania s wildlife is abundant rich game densities occur in all the parks but there are some undoubted highlights in the north the serengeti is notable for its million strong migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra ngorongoro has africa s densest populations of lion and spotted hyena as well as black rhino lake manyara has tree-climbing lions and flocks of flamingo whilst tarangire is excellent elephant country the southern parks are vast and wild selous has fabulous wetland scenery with abundant hippo crocodile and birdlife it has africa s highest population of wild dog and buffalo as well as lion elephant leopard and giraffe ruaha is good for large predators and localised antelope species such as sable roan and greater and lesser kudu in the west mahale is africa s best place to track chimpanzees with a population of over 1,000 in the mountains as the park borders lake tanganyika you can also snorkel amongst cichlid fish tanzania is a birdwatcher s paradise with well over a thousand species recorded finally the marine life is unparalleled with untouched coral reefs fish abound from the giant batfish to pipefish and potato groupers plus turtles rays wrasses and more audley in tanzania tanzania s safari areas can be divided into the northern southern and western `circuits each `circuit encompasses three or four parks the `northern circuit comprises the serengeti ngorongoro tarangire and lake manyara parks the `southern circuit selous and ruaha and the `western circuit katavi and mahale we recommend that you focus on just one or possibly two circuits in order to have time to relax as well as explore all the circuits combine well with a stay on the islands knowing the country well we can recommend different ways to explore such as flying from one camp to another or exploring on guided camping safaris climate tanzania has a pleasant tropical climate as it is near the equator there is little temperature fluctuation between summer and winter with temperatures ranging from about 25c to 30c all year round there are regional variations with the coastal belt being hotter and more humid inland areas dryer and cooler and the mountains chilly at night tanzania s rain falls mainly between november and may the rains can be divided into the short rains november and december and long rains february to early may during the short rains downpours tend to be quick before the sun comes out again during the long rains downpours can last for hours or even days and we do not recommend travel during this time accommodation tanzania s accommodation is mostly small and owner-run we ve chosen tiny riverbank lodges in the selous tented camps in the wild areas of ruaha treetop houses in tarangire and character coffee lodges in the highlands on the coast we ve found palm-roofed cottages on far flung beaches and stylish lodges on private islands at all our safari lodges we insist on professional guides and a pristine location tanzania mpumalanga the kruger park telephone 01993 838 545 01869 276 250 chada camp 57[close] |
