The grade is coded in the markings on the head of each bolt. For automotive applications, one should stick to bolts that are either Grade 5 or Grade 8, and these grades can be identified by the number of radial lines on the bolt head. While the arrangement of the lines can vary from one manufacturer to another, they will always radiate from the center of the head. Grade 5 bolts are the minimum grade capable of bearing the loads and stresses of automotive applications. All Grade 5 bolts have three radial lines. Grade 8 bolts are high-strength, which makes them ideal for automotive use. All Grade 8 bolts have six radial lines on them.
