BMW Riders Apparel Glossary
Important terms from A-Z.
Kevlar
A para-aramide fiber, which is five times
stronger than steel at the same weight.
The melting point is 840 F.
Laminate
A joint structure of various materials created
by thermal adhesion. The adhesive is applied
in spots at various positions. Particularly
suited for use with all-weather membranes.
Can also take the form of a lining laminate or
a 3-layer laminate and does not always need
to be thermally attached to the upper material.
Motorcycle-specific cut
This pattern takes into consideration the contours of the body when adopting the riding
position atop a motorcycle. The sleeve holes
are positioned more toward the front, the
sleeves and legs incorporate important bends
and there are numerous other special design
details.
Nappa leather
The upper surface of the hide. Smooth and
slightly shiny, worked to a soft leather with a
fine surface structure.
Nickel-free accessories
All buttons and zippers we use contain no
nickel and are thus completely skinfriendly.
Nomex
Heat resistant material made of fire-retarding
aramide fibers.
Nubuk leather
Leather that possesses a high level of breathing activity and has a slightly roughened surface, resulting in a soft, velvety grip.
PCP/CP
Pentachlorphenol (PCP) is prohibited by
the German Prohibited Chemicals Order of
14.10.93 and may only be used in leather
processing in amounts up to the prescribed
limit of 5 mg/kg.
ProFoam
Viscous substance that hardens instantly
on impact. Excellent shock absorption in all
thermal conditions.
ProSafe
Integral polyurethane foam with an open-cell
structure and a closed-cell outer skin. Resists
the influence of the environment. Used in
protectors.
Gauntlet
The portion of the glove that extends above
the wrist.
Glass-fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP)
The individual fibers (aramide, carbon, glass
fiber) can be mixed in varying proportions
according to requirements. Certain characteristics can be achieved through variation of the
direction and position of the fibers within the
compound; e.g. low weight, high strength,
high rigidity, low heat expansion and good
thermal properties.
GORE-TEX
A membrane made of Teflon (PTFE/Polytetrafluorethylene). Innumerable microscopic
pores prevent the penetration of large water
droplets while allowing the much smaller
water vapor molecules to pass through.
The branch-like structure of the membrane
means that it is also completely windproof.
GORE-TEX XCR
The GORE-TEX XCR 3-layer laminate features 25% improved breathability compared
to conventional 3-layer laminates while remaining durably wind- and waterproof. GORE-
TEX XCR keeps out the cold and ensures a
pleasant body climate even in extremely hot
conditions.
Gusset
A triangular inset to give width and or strength.
On motorcycle apparel, it is usually found on
the sleeve or pant cuff, and in the arm area for
more width.
Hydrophobic treatment
A treatment that renders leather waterrepellent. BMW uses the vat immersion technique under application of top quality 3M
Scotchguard as the active agent. The best
results are obtained when the leather fibers
are encapsulated without affecting the natural
state of the pore structure, so as to maintain
the active breathing action.
InoTex
Highly abrasion resistant and lightweight
blend of cotton, Lycra , Kevlar , and Dynafil
with a jeans look.
Kangaroo leather
Finer, more closely interwoven fibers and a
tighter structure make this leather even more
durable than cowhide on a thickness comparison basis.
Keprotec
A blend of Kevlar and PA fibers that adds to
the already excellent Kevlar characteristics
of stretch properties and abrasion resistance.
Used to reinforce those areas that are most at
risk in the event of a fall (elbows, shoulders,
knees, thumbs, etc.).
AirTex
Mesh-like,highly tear-resistant Dynafil
polyamide weave.
Armacor (GORE-TEX Armacor)
A new kind of highly tear-resistant material
combining Kevlar and Cordura with the
first class weather properties of GORE-TEX
in a 3-layer laminate.
Azo dyes
These dyes may not be used in colored outer
materials since they can break down into carcinogenic amines.
BIOMEX
BIOMEX products take ergonomics and natural movement into account. In this way they
support and take the strain off the joints in all
movements, especially in extreme situations.
Breathing action
Technically defined as the resistance offered
to water vapor permeability (RET value). The
lower the RET value, the more permeable the
material to air.
Carbon
Heat-resistant chemical fiber, lighter than
glass fiber. Characterized by high strength
and rigidity.
CE test mark
The CE mark (CE=Communaut Europ enne)
indicates that the product complies with the
safety requirements laid down in the European Unions directives.
Cordura 500/700
Nylon yarn that consists of 100% polyamide.
The manufacturing process involves respinning and weaving the cut polyamide fibers.
The melting point is 410 F. Cordura 700 is
even more tear-resistant.
Design
The characteristics of BMW design include
the use of classic shapes and colors. The
guiding principle is: Form follows function .
DuPont Coolmax
DuPont Coolmax consist of hollow fibers
that transport humidity to the outside very
quickly by means of capillary action making
the material dry 50% faster than cotton.
Dynafil
A highly tear-resistant polyamide yarn that is
even more robust than Cordura 500/700 and
is even more resistant to high temperatures.
Expanding pleats
The upper material is sewn onto the stretch
material in a corrugated form. This allows the
compound to stretch, rendering the safety
factor of the highly tear-resistant upper material intact.
Serafil
Highly tear-resistant safety yarn; the only one
of its kind in BMW Riders Apparel.
Safety, active and passive
Active safety refers to accident prevention
measures, or instance the use of reflective
materials for increased visibility. Passive
safety is the important aspect in the event
of an accident, for instance the use of abrasion-resistant outer materials and impactabsorbing protectors.
schoeller -PCM.
A space research material that balances temperatures.
Storm cuff
A sleeve inlay that forms a waterproof closure
around the wrist and prevents moisture from
penetrating from outside.
Taslan
A term denoting a group of materials in which
the polyamide fibers are altered through the
application of steam. In this way, the fibers
swell up, and become softer, while retaining
their resistance to wind and water as well as
their air resistance properties.
TFL Cool System
Cool technology is used for dark leather and
textile wear. Thanks to a special manufacturing process, sunlight is reflected from the
dark surface of the leather or fabric in the
same way as from a light surface. The upper
material does not heat up so strongly and the
danger of overheating is reduced considerably.
Venturi
BMW uses this active breathing wind and
waterproof membrane as a laminate, whose
main advantage is its low weight. It can also
withstand water pressure of up to 10 m.
x-static
Textile with integrated silver. Anti-bacterial
and odor-reducing, anti-static, high level of
moisture transportation, quick drying, and
temperature-balancing.
Z-Liner
This is the membrane between the upper
material and the actual lining, which is suspended in the garment without any seams.
