Page 49 of Delgado Community College 2003-2004 Catalog by Delgado Community College New Orleans LouisianaThe Tech Prep Rising Star Program prepares students to become tomorrows leaders through a rigorous and relevant curriculum that stresses high academic achievement. Students are prepared more effectively for higher education through their participation in career academies that link high school coursework to advanced technical programs in either the community or technical colleges and which may be transferred to a baccalaureate program. Ideally, students will also develop the qualifications necessary to obtain employment in professional careers that are in demand in the current labor market. Program provides students with a unique opportunity to begin their college education while still in high school. This facilitates the transition from high school to post-secondary education, and consequently, earlier graduation from college. participate in either concurrent enrollment, dual enrollment, or Summer Connections. Students may earn Carnegie units from their high school in vocational courses only, as well as college credit, from the community or technical colleges. With this program, the transition to college is made easier. Tech Prep Summer Connections Tech Prep Summer Connections is an eight- week summer work and project-based learning program, which allows academy students to earn and learn in an area of interest to them. Rising juniors and seniors also earn college credit through this program. Delgado Community College and Tech Prep Summer Connections Program incorporate post-secondary classroom training, the high school career academies, and work- based learning opportunities in ten career clusters-Architectural Restoration, Financial Services, Hospitality and Tourism, Police Pre- Cadet Program, Automotive Technician, Culinary Pro-Start, and Studio Recording. Learning occurs when students acquire, interpret, and evaluate new knowledge. When knowledge is applied in a practical context, learning is accelerated. Joint planning between the post-secondary classroom instructor and the work-based site coordinator coordinate the curriculum so that the students apply what was learned in the classroom in the morning to their work-based training in the afternoon. Summer Connections students receive either three to six college credit hours in addition to an internship experience. Other enrichment activities include career guidance and exploration, guest speakers, field trips, and mentors. The following documents are required and may be obtained from the Tech Prep site coordinator at your high school: Recommendation from Principal and Counselor, Parental Consent Form, High School Transcript, ACT scores; forms are submitted to the Tech Prep Office at Delgado Community College. Additionally, tuition excludes the $40 Application, SGA, and Technology Fees.
