60-64 galaxie quality ford restoration parts `63 64 vent window regulator repair all you `63 64 galaxie owners know the problem open the vent window and it moves back and forth about 2 or 3 inches and the handle moves in and out about 3/4 of an inch then you go to close it and you can t quite get it to close and so you have wind noise also the handle tries to eat the door upholstery here is my fix-for-it that i ve been using since 1964 so i guess you can say that it s a proven method you have to remove the door upholstery panel and the vent regulator from the door make sure you have all the pieces you ll probably have to fish around in the bottom of the door for them now is a good time to clean out all the dirt and leaves and the drains in the bottom of the door too what you ll probably find is the backing plate and wavy washer disassemble the regulator don t try to remove the vent window shaft from the regulator it s not necessary and clean all the parts in solvent and blow them dry now check to make sure that both gears are good and that you have all the parts if the gears are bad or you re missing any parts better find another regulator and they aren t interchangeable from side to side parts list main regulator body with vent window shaft and gear inside backing plate handle shaft with gear large flat washer wavy washer and small flat washer now for the fix clamp the regulator in a vice and file the backing plate lugs down they have to be filed below the surface of the backing plate about 1/8 inch fit the plate on the regulator to make sure now in the center of the lugs will be a center punch see view a drill and tap a hole in each one for a 10-32 machine screw next comes the reassembly blow out all of the filings and make sure the regulator is clean inside pack the inside with white grease put the large flat washer inside the regulator over the handle shaft hold and install the shaft into the regulator with a twisting motion to engage the gears then put the small flat washer onto the shaft and then the wavy washer almost done now install the backing plate to hold it on use two 10-32 x 1/2 inch machine screws and two #10 flat washers put red locktight on the screws to help keep them from coming loose then put a handle on and see how good you are the rest is just a matter of putting the door back together and there you have it better than new and it won t come apart again article reprinted with permission from the gazette of the ford galaxie club of america visit us online dennis-carpenter.com 93
