In EDU 202, students explore a range of key issues related to education using a
variety of educational technology and media applications. Topics include purpose of
schools, the teaching profession, legal issues, governance, finance, equity issues, an
introduction to special education and multicultural education, and the relationship
between politics and education. Students complete a 40-hour internship in a K-12
classroom, interact with learners as a tutor and assistant, begin to explore their own
philosophies of education, and understand school structure.
In EDU 302, students continue to build their understanding of the education
process through readings and directed activities in the philosophical, historical, sociological, and psychological foundations of regular and special education in American
schools. The establishment of a developmental frame of reference is a key component of this course segment. Specific theories in all of these areas are explored and
applied. A 40-hour internship in a K-12 classroom is required as a part of this course.
This is a 3-hour course.
Elementary students next enroll in EDU 310, Developmental and Diagnostic
Reading. Students acquire tools for understanding the process of reading, for reading
instruction, and for diagnosis of reading difficulties that may occur at all instructional levels.
Students next complete a 3-hour course in either Language Arts (EDU 311) for
elementary candidates where students will focus on the development of language,
both oral and written, and the integration of these skills across the curriculum; or
Content Area Reading (EDU 312) for secondary candidates where students will identify means for utilizing and building reading and writing skills through the content
they choose to teach.
In EDU 354, 357, or 359 (Strategies) students concentrate on curriculum, instruction and assessment, and focus on methods appropriate to their major and level of
endorsement sought. Students are introduced to the Clinical Cycle process, a variety
of theories about teaching and learning, and topics such as classroom management,
parent involvement, and unit and lesson planning. Students are challenged to identify and begin to implement their educational philosophy in the classroom. During the
40-hour internship that accompanies this course, students are required to teach a
minimum of six lessons.
The Profession of Teaching course concludes with EDU 402,the Student Teaching
and Synthesis Experience, which is designed by endorsement level to integrate the
students classroom learning and field experience into an applicable philosophical
framework. The course includes weekly seminars during the student teaching component and an intensive three and one-half week wrap-up experience on campus following student teaching. The Student Teaching and Synthesis Experience should be
the only course taken during that semester. It includes topics such as ethical questions, legal issues, ethnic and cultural concerns, and exceptionality of learners.
