Internships Many majors offer an internship, normally worth three to nine semester hours of credit. The internship usually consists of a carefully supervised work experience in an area related to the students major field of study. Typically, this experience takes place over the period of a summer or one semester in the students junior or senior year. Internships may be offered on a pass/fail basis at the discretion of each division. This decision will be made and posted well in advance of class registration. All students participating in an internship are expected to provide their own transportation as well as assume responsibility for other expenses incurred while in the field. Students interested in establishing an internship should consult department guidelines and the Internship Program Handbook published by the Office of the Vice President and Dean of the College, and should consult the faculty coordinator in their major. Foundation Standards Ferrum College expects all students to achieve minimum levels of proficiency in five academic skill areas by the time they are prepared to advance to sophomore standing. Students under-prepared in any of these areas are expected to avail themselves of the varieties of assistance offered through the Academic Resources Center and to meet these standards within their first year of full-time study. I.To write and speak with unity of purpose, coherent organization, and effective use of English consistent with standard rules and ordinary conventions. II.To read and to think critically, to comprehend, analyze, interpret, evaluate, and synthesize information as a process of forming mature judgments and arriving at sound conclusions. III.To analyze quantitative information and to use mathematical skills and tools as an aid to the critical thinking necessary to reach sound conclusions. IV. To gather and evaluate information from libraries, from computer-based resources, from observation, and from experimentation. V.To use computers effectively for word processing, information access, and data management. Assessment of Student Progress In order to ascertain whether appropriate progress has been made, a review of indicators that the standard has been achieved will be made following the completion of the students second semester of full-time study. Results will be made known to the student and adviser. A student may indicate successful achievement of the Foundation Standards in the following ways: Standard I Passing ENG 102 with a grade of C or higher, or passing a written proficiency test upon transferring to Ferrum College.
