Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management
B.S. Degree
This major provides an umbrella term under which all participating students are
exposed to a common core of processes involved in the delivery of leisure services, regardless of the setting in which it takes place or the clientele being served (leadership, planning, supervision, organization, administration, management, marketing,
research, or evaluation). It accentuates the similarities rather than the differences
between and among programs of study in this field. First, and foremost, this major
will prepare students for employment in a broad range of sectors of the field/industry.Outdoor recreation remains an integral part of the program, and is one of the three
main thrusts of the program. Ferrum Colleges new Ferrum Outdoors initiative will
likely expand the number of outdoor adventure programs and activities that will be
afforded to the student body and will provide many new opportunities for student
majors with an emphasis area in Outdoor Recreation to plan and conduct outdoor
adventure activities, plan, coordinate, and conduct field trips and excursions to outdoor recreation venues.
The other two emphasis areas are Community Leisure Services and Hospitality
and Tourism management. The explosion in the number of businesses providing commercial recreation, hospitality and tourism facilities, programs, and services in the private for-profit sector and the greater emphasis being placed on accountability and
enterprise funds by the public and private non-profit sectors requires that student
graduates become more adroit at the processes of financial management and marketing. In addition, more public parks and recreation agencies are expanding their role
and function and are becoming increasingly the destination marketing arm of their
community, necessitating that greater emphasis be placed on hospitality and guest
services, convention management, and special event planning and management.
