page 25 brazil more importantly the rivers become virtual aquariums during the dry season september through mid-april on the rivers where these lodges operate hundreds of miles of surrounding varzea forest and savanna flood annually during the wet season when the water comes up it creates a giant fish nursery there is endless cover few predators and abundant food ensuring strong survival rates for spawning fish and an incredible growth rate when the dry season approaches the water and the baitfish move back into the main rivers and surrounding oxbow lakes where a seven-month peacock in the amazon it is eat or be eaten sight fishing for peacock bass on the crystal-clear waters of the agua boa river you have to experience it to believe it aside from the abundance of majestic wildlife in the amazon jungle one of the most amazing parts of this region is the annual flood cycle in its rivers and the benefits to the fishery during the fishing season the rivers run clear over sandy bottoms due to minimal rain sediment and nutrients this means there are few bugs and that rivers are perfect for fly fishermen and conventional anglers alike bass feeding frenzy commences in this rich environment it is literally eat or be eaten a spectacle of nature that should not be missed imagine sight casting to a pack of 10 to 20pound peacock bass with their enormous green bodies broad black stripes and blood-red eyes crashing baitfish with no fishing competition whatsoever each destination offered has access to countless miles of water abounding with numerous lagoons and inland lakes many having never been fished before but this region is more than just a magnificent fishery birders and animal enthusiasts will revel in the chance to hike jungle trails and participate in river tours macaws parrots monkeys amazon river turtles giant amazon river otters black caimen iguanas bracket deer tapir and even jaguar are indigenous to these river systems and are daily sights so come with us to a wild place the amazon is waiting.
