The Brain Manual
by Dr Ian Banks
In this latest book Dr. Ian Banks looks
at how the brain works, what effects
the various inputs and outputs have,
and what people can do to improve
and maintain their own mental wellbeing and that of those around them.
Recent research shows that simple
things such as diet and exercise can
have a profound effect on mood and
memory. Similarly, crosswords and
computer games need not be just
pastimes, they can increase mental
agility. And what happens when you
meditate or visit a hypnotherapist? As
usual, Jim Campbells cartoons and
Haynes technical illustrations
complement the text to make this an
entertaining as well as a thoughtprovoking read.

The Cancer Manual
by Dr Ian Banks
With the exception of cancer of the
breast, thyroid and melanoma, all
cancers are more common in men
than in women. Being a man could
seriously damage your health unless
we recognise the risks. The good news
is that although about one man in
three will develop a cancer at some
time in his life, the most common
forms are almost entirely preventable
through attention to lifestyle or
treatable through early diagnosis. This
manual, published in cooperation with
the Mens Health Forum, gives expert
advice on all aspects of prevention
and treatment in the unique Haynes
style. For each copy sold, 50p will be
donated to the Mens Health Forum.

The Man Manual.
The practical step-by-step guide
to mens health
by Dr Ian Banks
With a little care Man Mk 1 should last
a long lifetime with minimal need for
maintenance or spare parts. However,
like any piece of high technology, a
basic understanding of what goes on
beneath the bonnet will greatly aid
longevity. In general, men are likely to
look after their cars better than their
own bodies and, while car MOTs are
required by law, there is no such
equivalent for the driver. Published in
conjunction with the Mens Health
Forum and Lilly ICOS, this manual
should go a long way to improving
mens health. For each copy sold, 50p
will be donated to cancer research. an inspired move Daily Telegraph brilliant Womans Own a no-nonsense guide BMA News

our years ago the Mens Health Forum approached Haynes with a
suggestion for a manual with a difference: it was to look like a car manual,
but the subject was to be male health, not car mechanics. The original
Man Manual was published in November 2002 and was an immediate success,
with printers and warehouse staff working overtime to keep up with demand.
It has been translated into German, Finnish and Russian, with other foreign
language versions in preparation. It also turned out to be the first of what are
now called the Haynes Family Manuals.
The reason for the success of these titles is not hard to find. Haynes have
crafted popular manuals with clear step-by-step formats for many years, and
their jargon-free approach has been used by generations of men to increase their
knowledge of car maintenance. The Family Manuals clearly explain to men how
their bodies, and those of their loved ones, work. They offers maintenance tips
and highlight some of the most common health problems, including their causes
and prevention. They are designed to encourage men to get over any ignorance,
embarrassment and head-in-the-sand mentality and go to see a doctor as soon
something goes wrong with their body just as they would with their car.
The manuals have won various awards, including one from the Plain English
Campaign for the Cancer Manual and a Highly Commended for the Sex Manual
in the 2004 BMA Book Competition. Tiff Needell, racing driver and broadcaster,
is a fan. He comments: Haynes manuals are legendary ... men trust Haynes to
bring them accurate information about their cars. So I think it is an act of genius
to use this famous format to talk to men about their bodies and their health.
The continuing success of the Haynes Family Manuals has resulted in
charitable donations of over 62,000, shared among the following charities:
Mens Health Forum (Man, Cancer HGV and Brain Manuals), Great Ormond
Street Hospital Childrens Charity (Baby Manual) and Walk the Walk (Woman
Manual). For the manuals mentioned, Haynes donates 50p for every copy sold.
The Woman Manual
The practical step-by-step guide
to womens health, for men
by Dr Ian Banks
This title in the acclaimed series of
Haynes Family Manuals is intended to
help men understand all aspects of
womens health. Author Ian Banks
brings his talent for demystifying
medical jargon (and his
compassionate sense of humour) to
bear on topics from anaemia to weight
loss, breast cancer to thrush, and all
points in between. Making sure that
the womans point of view is properly
represented, well-known broadcaster
and agony aunt Suzie Hayman has
read the manuscript, made a few
corrections and provided numerous
hints and tips; these have been
illustrated in inimitable style by
cartoonist Jim Campbell.
