Page 11 of Design for our future selves 2001 Awards by Helen Hamlyn Research Centre - Royal College of Art9 A shopping trolley that promises to be easy to steer and reduce time spent in the checkout queue. The new and potentially patentable steering system offers better control and easier steering particularly when heavily loaded, relieving the user of the dangers of backstrain or limb twisting whilst battling though the twists and turns of the car park. The burden of having to unload and reload the merchandise at checkout is removed through use of standard technology. Although of obvious benefit to a wide range of people, the manoeuvrability and convenience of the design has specific application to older people.
