Page 6 of Design for our future selves 2003 Awards by Helen Hamlyn Research Centre - Royal College of Art4 special awards Snowdon Award A special Award for Disability Projects by graduating students will be made by Lord Snowdon, Provost of the Royal College of Art. Lord Snowdon is a long-time supporter of the rights of disabled people and an active designer in the field of design for disability. Previous winners of the Snowdon Award for Disability Projects at the RCA have included a hand-pedal trike by Ben Wilson, adaptable cutlery by William Welch, landscaped tableware for stroke patients by Lisa-Dionne Morris and a washbasin for wheelchair users by Owen Evans. Helen Hamlyn Award A special Award for creativity and innovation across all categories will be made by Helen Hamlyn, whose Foundation has endowed the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre. The Helen Hamlyn Foundation was established in 1985 to promote better products and a better environment for older people. Today the Foundationfs interests have broadened to encompass inclusive design practical initiatives aimed at improving quality of life for people of all ages and abilities in collaboration with industry and the voluntary sector. The projects and programmes Helen Hamlyn has initiated at the RCA are helping to shape the thinking of a generation of young designers and foster a growing sense of social responsibility.[close] |
