103 The foundation prepares candidates in general knowledge, professional education, special studies, and Christian service. Threads woven into and throughout the program include: Mastery of subject matter Application of dynamic, research based theory Modeling Christian service Respect for learner individuality and diversity Effective utilization of technology Evidence of effective Assessment as central to teaching and learning Admission to the Teacher Education Program Students at Louisiana College should apply to the Department of Teacher Education for admission to the Teacher Education Program during the first semester of their sophomore year. Applications will be accepted from transfer students either from other institutions or other curricula at more advanced levels in their college career. To be admitted to the Teacher Education Program a student must meet the following criteria:1. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5. 2. Earned a C or better in all courses required for teacher certification. 3. Passed the PRAXIS Pre-Professional Skill Tests (PPST) in Reading, Writing and Math. Students cannot take upper-level teacher education courses (300-400) until they have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Admission to the Student Teaching Program Students who plan to receive an education degree from Louisiana College must successfully complete a semester of student teaching under the supervision of an experienced, competent classroom teacher and a member of the faculty of the Department of Teacher Education. The Student Teaching Program at Louisiana College is conducted in the public schools under a special agreement between the college and the Rapides Parish Schools. All student teacher placements are made by the faculty of the Department of Teacher Education in conformity with the requirements of the Louisiana Department of Education, and with the approval of the Rapides Parish Superintendent of Schools. Students are to schedule not more than twelve (12) credit hours during the student teaching semester. The class(es) taken must be in the evening so as not to interfere with the all-day student teaching experience. To qualify for the Student Teaching Program a student must meet the following criteria: 1. Admitted to the Teacher Education Program. 2. Filed an application for Student Teaching with the director or supervisor of student teaching at the beginning of the semester prior to the student teaching semester. 3. Classified as a senior during the semester of student teaching. 4. Successfully completed the courses in his/her professional sequence up to that point, including the appropriate methods class, which must be taken at Louisiana College. 5. Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in the following: all course work, courses in professional education, and other courses required for certification (allied and major courses).
