colonists from new spain now mexico northward up the trail that would later be known as el camino real to settle the fertile valleys of the upper rio grande with the colonists came franciscan monks who needed wine for their daily mass only a small sip was required however it had to be wine the supplies that had been issued to each monk upon leaving the old world were quickly depleted but it was a thousand miles and six months journey by ox-cart to replenish their stock of wine however for 30 years the monks obeyed the spanish law that forbade production of wine in the new world wine was procured from spain shipped to veracruz in new spain then overland by ox-cart to new mexico supply trains came once every three years and their manifests listed approximately 45 gallons of wine on each trip 30 wines of the san juan tasting room 28 tularosa vineyards winery finally the church along with the colonial governor francisco manuel de silva nieto whose government was paying to import the wine chose to resolve their problem by planting grapevines and making their own sacramental wine by 1884 an ad in the socorro daily sun offered 40,000 gallons of wine available at l h huning and la vina winery on hwy 28 or you could return to i-10 and follow it south to la union and follow the map return to las cruces and stay overnight the next morning go north on i-25 to hwy 70/54 toward alamogordo just beyond alamogordo stop in at the heart of the desert tasting room at the eagle ranch pistachio co go just a little farther up the highway to the arena blanca winery at mcginn s pistachio tree ranch continue north and take hwy 54 to tularosa winery return to hwy 70 and head east to willmon vineyards located in the end of the vine shop in the heart of scenic ruidoso all tours
