Introduction to Medical Office Practice
(Formerly Medical Secretary/Receptionist 60). 3 units/3 hours. CR/NC option.
Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equivalent
Consideration of the multiple functions performed by the
Administrative Medical Assistant; appointment scheduling;
verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills; record
management including confidentiality; interpersonal skills.
Focus is on the development of organizational and decision
making skills utilized by the Administrative Medical Assistant.

MA 61 Law and Ethics in the Medical Office
(Formerly Medical Secretary/Receptionist 61). 1 unit/1 hour. Recommended:
Eligibility for English 100A or equivalent
Interrelationships between the medical office workers role and
responsibilities and the legal and ethical guidelines are explored.
Emphasis is on analysis and decision making encountered in
health care settings in which the Medical Assistant would need
to demonstrate legal, ethical and safety behaviors. (CSU)
MA 62 Advanced Medical Terminology
(Formerly Medical Secretary/Receptionist 62B). 4 units/4 hours. CR/NC
option. Prerequisite: Health Care 60 and 2 units of Anatomy 51. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equivalent
Emphasis on body systems and terminology of medical
specialties with development, analysis, interpretation and
application of advanced medical terminology used in a variety of
medical settings. This includes advanced terminology related to
body systems and medical specialties and associated with
anatomic terms, diagnosis, systems, conditions, medical and
surgical procedures, clinical and diagnostic laboratory, and

MA 63A
Clinical Procedures I
3 units/2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. CR/NC option. Prerequisite: Health
Care 60, Anatomy 52 (3 units), Medical Assiting 61, 62 Recommended:
Eligibility for English 1A. Medical Assiting or experience in a medical office.
Student will develop knowledge of medical assisting skills and
responsibilities for the clinical area of the the medical office,
including medical and surgical aseptic procedures; vital signs
determination; assisting with physical examinations, including
positioning and draping, height, weight, vision, and hearing
testing; obtaining patient history; disinfection and sterilization
techniques; eye and ear assessments and procedures.
MA 63B
Clinical Procedures II
3 units/2 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. CR/NC option. Prerequisite:
Medical Assisting 63A. Recommended: Eligibility for English 1A, Medical
Assisting 60 (or 6 months experience in a medical office.)
Emphasis on assessing and preparing for medical office
emergencies. Students will practice procedures and instructions
for giving First Aid and performing CPR techniques.
Electrocardiography procedures will be examined, recording a 12
- lead elecrocardiogram, applying a Holter monitor, and
recognizing cardiac arrhythmias.
MA 65
Pharmacology Administration of Medications
2 units/1 hour lecture, 3 hours laboratory. CR/NC option. Prerequisite: Health
Care 60, Anatomy 52, Medical Assisting 61, 62, 63A. Recommended: Eligibilty
for English 1A, Medical Assisting 60 or 6 months experience in a medical office.
Basic Pharmacology includes priciples of drug administration
and preparation and administration fo medications by oral,
intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular routes. Students
review basic math calculations and conversions for
administration of medication. Lab includes return demonstration
by students. Drugs are identified by their clinical use, mechanism
of action, side effects and adverse reactions. Risk factors for drug
and alcohol abuse are presented along with drug addiction and
withdrawal symptoms.
MA 66.1
Medical Assisting Externship
(Formerly Medical Secretary/Receptionist 66.1). 3.5 units/0.5 hours lecture, 1
hour laboratory, 9 hours by arrangement. Prerequisite: Completion of
Administrative Medical Assisting course requirements: Medical Assisting 60,
Health Care 60 and Anatomy 51 (2 units), Business General 70, Business
Office Technology 77.3 or equivalent. Recommended: Eligibility for English
100A or equivalent
Practical experience in medical offices and hospitals to develop
office and interpersonal skills in preparation for entry level
employment as an Administrative Medical Assistant. Emphasis
on the ability to function under stress, identify priorities and
organize specific tasks necessary for office efficiency. (CSU)
MA 66.2
Medical Transcription
Externship
(Formerly Medical Secretary/Receptionist 66.2). 3.5 units/0.5 hour lecture, 10
hours by arrangement. Prerequisite: Completion of Health Care 60 and
Anatomy 51 (2 units), Medical Assisting 70A, Medical Assisting 70B, Medical
Assisting 71, Business General 70, and Business Office Technology 77.3 or
knowledge of Word Perfect 5.1, TB and immunization clearance. Typing of 50
wpm on IBM or IBM compatible on 5-minute timed test. Recommended:
Eligibility for English 100A or equivalent
Practical experience in hospitals, clinics, or offices to develop
medical transcription skills in preparation for entry level
employment as a medical transcriptionist. Emphasis on the
ability to function under stress with accuracy, speed and
utilization of resources in challenging medical transcription
