NR 73 Nursing Care of High Risk Maternal, Neonatal Pediatric Client 4.5 units /5.7 hours lecture, 21.4 by arrangement for 6 weeks. Prerequisite: Nursing 74A with a grade of C or better This course is designed to provide the LVN student an opportunity to complete a selected portion of a second year ADN nursing course with a focus on high risk maternal, neonatal, and pediatric nursing. Course consists of theory, skills lab, and clinical experience to provide a knowledge and practice base consistent with that of the generic student completing Level III of the ADN program. Utilizing Orem's Self-Care Framework and the Nursing Process, concepts related to the universal self-care requisites of oxygenation, fluid and electrolytes, nutrition, ratory mechanisms, mobility, protection, as well as developmental selfcare requisites in relation to the high risk maternal, neonatal, and pediatric client, are explored. This course includes 34 hours of lecture, 20 hours of skills lab, and 108 hours clinical experience in maternal, neonatal, and pediatric nursing (2 units lecture and 2.5 units lab). (CSU) NR 74A VN to ADN Bridge 6 units/4 hours lecture, 5.8 by arrangement. Prerequisite: Chemistry 60, Physiology 1, Microbiology 60 or 5, or Health Care 55, Anatomy 1, Food and Nutrition 62 and Psychology 1A 53 or 4. Recommended: English 100B or 1A required for certificate. To be taken prior to entering the program. Course is designed to increase the knowledge base of the Licensed Vocational Nurse so that his/her knowledge base is consistent with that of the generic nursing student entering Level III of the SRJC Associate Degree Nursing Program and meet the psychiatric nursing requirement as established by the Board of Registered Nursing. The course consists of two components: medical-surgical nursing theory/nursing skills, and psychiatric nursing. Course includes Orem's self-care theory and concepts of oxygenation, nutrition/elimination, fluid and electrolytes, nursing process, and the diabetic client. The psychiatric component focuses upon the etiology and manifestations of mental illness, psychotherapy, treatment and nursing care of clients with common psychiatric disorders. The psychiatric nursing component includes clinical experience, as well as theory. Gerontological concepts are integrated throughout. The student is provided an opportunity to practice basic nursing skills in order to demonstrate competence prior to entering the clinical setting. The course includes 42 hours of medical-surgical theory, 26 hours of skills lab, 72 hours of psychiatric nursing clinical experience, and 24 hours of psychiatric nursing theory. (4 units lecture and 2 units lab). (CSU) NR 74B Intermediate Medical Surgical Nursing 8.5 units/5.7 hours lecture, 19.2 by arrangement. Prerequisites: Nursing 74B with a grade of C or better Designed to provide an opportunity for LVN's to complete a selected portion of a second year nursing course. Focus of this course is intermediate medical-surgical nursing. Concepts from the bio-psychosocial sciences introduced in previous courses are explored in greater depth.
