The history, development and patrol
philosophy; planning for field activities to
include functions of patrol, traffic, and
other preliminary investigative duties of
the field officer, technique for planning
patrol activities; handling complaints and
request for services; mechanics of field
interviews, searches, and arrest; the
handling of traffic related problems; civil
and domestic disturbances and other
community crime incidents. (CSU)
AJ 70 Introduction to Corrections
3 units/3 hours. Recommended: Eligibility for
English 100A or equivalent
History, philosophy and current
procedures in contemporary corrections;
to include probation, institutions, parole,
and related community and private
corrections. The interrelationships
between corrections and other
components of the justice system. Career
opportunities, education and training
requirements, and role expectations.

Correctional Interviewing and
Counseling
3 units/3 hours. Recommended: Eligibility for
English 100A or equivalent; Administration of
Justice 21, 55 and 70
Introduction and overview of
interviewing and counseling theory and
techniques. Self awareness and
interpersonal communication skills for
entry level practitioners in corrections.
Develops an awareness of the components
necessary to develop a positive
relationship between the client and
corrections personnel. Develops an
awareness of advanced methods utilized
by professional counselors. (CSU)

Special Studies in
Administration of Justice
1-3 units/Variable hours by arrangement.
Prerequisite: Application to department; Administration of Justice 21 completed. Recommended:
Eligibility for English 100A or equivalent; major in
Administration of Justice; second year status
Seminars or individual conferences by
arrangement to provide for independent
study and enriched academic experience.

independent study including 49 and 98 courses.
AJ 200.1 Basic Police Academy
14 units/704 total classroom hours. Prerequisite:
Pass P.O.S.T. reading and writing test with score
of T42 or higher or equivalent. Alternately,
completion of English 100B or an equivalent course
with a grade of C or better. Must pass a
Department of Justice criminal records check. Have
the authorization of a physician who has examined
the student for suitability to participate in physical
training
A Basic Police Academy certified by the
Commission on Peace Officer Standards
and Training (P.O.S.T.) for the State of
California. This intensive 18 week
Academy teaches Criminal Law, Laws of
Search and Seizure, Laws of Evidence,
Traffic Laws, Investigative Techniques,
Patrol Procedures, Firearms, Defensive
Driver Training, Defensive Tactics, Police
Report Writing, First Aid, and C.P.R. The
Basic Police Academy provides instruction
and evaluation of all academic, physical,
and behavioral traits required by the State
of California to meet the minimum
standards to be employed as a peace
officer in California.
AJ 200.2A Basic Police Reserve Phase
I
7 units/322 hours, 20 weeks. Prerequisite: Pass
P.O.S.T. reading and writing test with score of T37
or higher. Alternately, completion of English 100B
with a grade of C or better. Must pass Department of Justice criminal records check and have a
valid California drivers license . Recommended:
Successful completion of Administration of Justice
22 and 54
Phase I consists of module A, B, and C
reserve officer training. Certified by the
Commission on Peace Officer Standard
and Training and fulfills the training
requirements for Level I Reserve. During
the course, students are taught criminal
law, search and seizure, evidence, report
writing, driver awareness techniques,
traffic enforcement, firearms and
defensive techniques.
May be taken for a total of 8 units.
AJ 200.2B Basic Police Reserve Phase
II
7 units/382 hours, 20 weeks. Prerequisite:
Completion of Administration of Justice 200.2A
with a grade of C or better; pass P.O.S.T. reading
and writing test with a score of T42 or higher, or
completion of English 100B with a grade of C or
better. Recommended: Administration of Justice 22
and 54
Second part of a two part Basic Police
Academy offered in an extended format.
Curriculum covers criminal investigation,
firearms, patrol procedures, defensive
tactics, first aid and CPR, crime scene
procedures, emergency vehicle operation
and crisis intervention.
May be taken for a total of 6 units.
AJ 200.3 Ranger Academy
4 units/25.4 hours lecture, 14.8 hours laboratory.
Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or
equivalent
Basic Law Enforcement Training approved
by the Federal government to certify
graduates for employment in the National
Parks.
May be taken for a total of 8 units.
AJ 205.14 Supervising Police Traffic
Control function
1 unit/40 total classroom hours. CR/NC only.
Prerequisite: Administration of Justice 200.1, the
basic course, or equivalent
General use of CVC as a reference source;
case law research; deployment of
personnel; recognizing stress symptoms in
traffic officers and providing solutions.
AJ 205.15 Patrol Aspects of
Traffic Law Enforcement
1 unit/40 total classroom hours. CR/NC only.
Prerequisite: Administration of Justice 200.1, the
basic course, or equivalent
Designed to provide technical training for
the student who is either a generalist
patrolman with traffic law enforcement
responsibilities or a traffic specialist.
AJ 205.17 Background Investigation
1 unit/40 total classroom hours. CR/NC only.
Prerequisite: Administration of Justice 200.1, the
basic course, or equivalent. Recommended:
Completion of English 100A, 104 or 1A and five
years experience in public safety
Develops investigative skills in
background employment and personnel
investigation.
AJ 205.18 Interviews and Interrogation
1 unit/40 total classroom hours. CR/NC only.
Prerequisite: Administration of Justice 200.1, or
equivalent
Individual methods and aids employed in
various aspects of interrogations and
interviews. Psychological advantages and
disadvantages for the interviewer during
the investigation process.
AJ 210.1 Officer Safety-Field Tactics
1 unit/40 total classroom hours. CR/NC only.
Prerequisite: Administration of Justice 200.1, or
equivalent
Legal and moral obligations of officers
involved in critical situations. Special
training and tactics and procedures for
protection to the officer and public.
