To get credit for professional experience for this class, each student will send a current job description letter of recommendation from their supervisor verifying that they have worked successfully for at least one year as a CHW. (CSU) CHW 52B Essential Skills for Community Health Worker II 3 units/3 hours lecture. Grade only. Prerequisite: Completion of CHW 50 CHW 52A CHW 52AL with grade of C or better. Corequisite: CHW 52BL and CHW 53. Training community health workers to be members of health care teams who provide practical and suitable services to medically underserved people in their Sonoma County communities. Skills include identifying health services providers, getting involved in the community, supporting community causes, identifying violence problems in communities, planning programs, and developing health education messages about a variety of health topics. (CSU) CHW 52BL Community Health Experience II 3 units/0.5 hour lecture, 7.5 hours by arrangement. Grade only. Prerequisite: CHW 50, 52A, 52AL Corequisite: CHW 52B, CHW 53 This course provides eight hours a week of experience as a Community Health Worker for students to practice skills learned in CHW 52B. Another hour each week will be spent with instructor/supervisor, discussing community organization, assessment, outreach skills, and appropriate client referrals. Community work assignments will demonstrate basic knowledge of vulnerable populations health issues, communicable diseases, nutrition, heart disease and violence prevention. Prerequisite: CHW 50, 52A, 52AL Corequisite: CHW 52B, 52BL Training community health workers in health education program planning and delivery, health promotion and self-care, using community organization, networking, and client advocacy. (CSU) Community Involvement CI 51 Community Involvement 51 0.5-3 units/up to 9 hours by arrangement. CR/NC only. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equivalent or concurrent enrollment in or completion of another degree applicable course in a previous semester or departmental recommendation; must acquire or be placed in an approved volunteer position. A self-directed student volunteer program designed to facilitate experiential learning and service to the community. Students work 50 hours per unit per semester for.5-3 units of credit at a variety of placements including schools, hospitals, recreation programs, day care centers, and various social service agencies. Volunteer activities may include: tutoring, reading for the blind, aiding in mental or physical health projects, assisting in community projects, assisting in classroom teaching, and other similar projects. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 6 units. CI 52 Selected Topics in Community Involvement 0.5-3 units/up to 9 hours by arrangement. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for Eng 100A is recommended. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 6 units. Computer Information Sciences CIS 5 Computer Literacy (Formerly BDP 5) 3 units/3 hours lecture, 1 hour by arrangement. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equiv. Designed for the transfer student and/or the person wanting a broad knowledge of computer concepts. No previous experience with computers is required or assumed. This course presents an overview of computers in our world today, how they work, how they are used and their impact on society. This course is primarily lecture with only a small portion of hands-on computer work. Lecture and scheduled lab required. (CSU/UC) AA/AS area B; CAN CSCI 2 CIS 10A Computer Science Fundamentals I (Formerly CIS 10) 3 units/2 hours lecture, 2 hours laboratory, 1 hour by arrangement. Grade only. Prerequisite: Completion of MATH 155 with grade of C or better; OR completion of MATH 155 or higher (V1); OR completion of MATH 155 or higher (V2). Recommended: Eligibility for English 1A or equiv. This course introduces computer science and software engineering. Topics include machine architecture, software theory, integrated development environments, object-oriented design and control-offlow constructs. Eight to ten programs are written in C++. Appropriate as a first course for those pursuing a four-year degree in computer science. Also serves as an introduction to programming for those interested in languages other than C++. (CSU/UC) CAN CSCI 22 CIS 10B Computer Science Fundamentals II 3 units/2 hours lecture, 3 hours by arrangement. Grade only. Prerequisite: Completion of CIS 10A with a grade of C or better. Recommended: Eligibility for English 1A or equiv. This course concludes the introduction of computer science and software engineering begun in CIS 10A. Topics include basic data structures, files, databases, artificial intelligence, theory of computation, abstract data types, arrays and pointers, recursion and inheritance. Eight to ten complete programs are written in C++. Serves as preparation for CIS 11: Data Structures Algorithms. (CSU) CIS 11 Data Structures and Algorithms 4 units/3 hours lecture, 5 hours by arrangement. Grade only. Prerequisite: CIS 10. Recommended: Eligibility for English 1A or equivalent. Intended as a second course for those pursuing computer programming. Topics include software engineering principles, the development of efficient algorithms, the design and selection of appropriate data structures, and an overview of computer science. Numerous programs are written in a suitable highlevel language. Required for the Programmer certificate. Appropriate for those pursuing a four year degree in computer science. (CSU/UC) CAN CSCI 24 CIS 12A COBOL Programming (Formerly BDP 12A) 4 units/3 hours lecture, 5 hours by arrangement. Grade only. Prerequisite: CIS 10 or CIS 52 or equivalent experience. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A. The student should have previous programming experience and be able to write simple programs which include iteration, input, calculations and output. A first semester course in COBOL programming, reading from a sequential disc file, printing report, calculation, control break processing and table manipulation. Emphasis on structured programming techniques. Required for the Computer Programmer certificate. (CSU/UC) CAN CSCI 8 CIS 12B Advanced COBOL Programming (Formerly BDP 12B) 4 units/3 hours lecture, 5 hours by arrangement. Grade only. Prerequisite: CIS 12A or equivalent experience. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A. Programming experience in COBOL including control break processing and table manipulation. A second semester course in COBOL programming. Topics include: data validation, working with multiple files, indexed sequential files, multidimensional tables, screens, sorting updating files, and subprogramming. Structured programming standards are utilized and team programming concepts introduced. (CSU/UC)
