Combines sound learning techniques such as effective listening, note-taking, test preparaton; encouraging the students growth in realizing their potential through decision making, goal setting, values, and time management. Recommended for students on Academic or Progress probation or on dismissal status. Assessment of study skills, time management, organizational skills, motivation, educational goals, and career goals. Students will evaluate these skills and goals in relationship to their enrollment at SRJC their poor academic status. The importance of self esteem and ways to improve it will be looked at. Provides a planned instruction program designed to assist students in improving their study skills. Formulated for all students, it will emphasize goal identification, organizing study habits, how to read and study textbooks, take effective notes, how to take examinations, and correct use of the library. Covers the total development of the individual and attitudes toward academic and personal problem solving. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 2 units. COUN 60.1 Overcoming Math Anxiety (Formerly GUID 60.1) 0.5-3 units/up to 3 hours lecture. CR/ NC option. Explore the nature, causes, and effects of quantitative reasoning anxiety, and define the impact of emotions and attitudes on learning and performance. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 4 units. COUN 60.2 Math Study Skills 0.5-3 units/up to 3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. A step by step approach to develop effective study skills that lead to successful completion of college math classes. Topics include the importance of learning the language of math, note-taking skills, study and test preparation skills, effective test taking preparation, and strategies for word problems. Students will identify personal factors that affect their success in math. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 4 units. COUN 61 Introduction to Career Development (Formerly GUID 61) 0.5-3 units/up to 3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equiv. Instruction in the development of a career plan. Emphasis is on interest and personality testing, values clarification, career information, research skills, individual skills assessment, decision making, goal setting and the development of a career implementation plan. Changing job trends and needs and the procurement and retention of employment. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 4 units. COUN 61.1 Job Search and Retention (Formerly GUID 61.1) 0.5-1 unit/up to 1 hour lecture. CR/NC only. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equivalent. Exploration of job market; use of letter of application, job application, resume, job interview; and skills necessary to find and retain employment. (CSU) COUN 61.2 Self-Paced Career Exploration (Formerly GUID 61.2) 0.5-3 units/up to 9 hours by arrangement. CR/NC only. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equiv. Self-paced instruction in career planning. Exploration of values, interests, capabilities, requirements of occupations, changing job trends; skills in finding and retaining a job. Students select from workshops, workbook assignments, interest inventories, and other activities to develop their own course. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 4 units. COUN 70 Theory, Techniques Practices in Human Development (Formerly GUID 70) 1-3 units/up to 3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Study of theories, techniques, and practices regarding human development as they pertain to society, groups, family, and individual behavior. (CSU) CSU area E May be taken for a total of 6 units. COUN 72 Development of the Multifaceted Self 3 units/51 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100A or equiv. This class will facilitate awareness of the self and of others through understanding of the multilayered, multicultured uniqueness of each person. Influences of ethnic heritage, nationality, gender, age, religion education, economic status,disabilities, and sexual preference contribute to the multifaceted individual. Although the focus will be on individual awareness, the broad categories of European American, Latino American, African American, and Asian American will be used to explore differences and similarities of the American culture. Issues regarding interactions at work, interactions at home, parenting, non-verbal communication, nutrition, health, and stress will be interwoven.
