A beginning oral communication course designed to
improve listening, speaking and writing skills needed
for survival in Germany. Students participate in a
variety of pronunciation, listening and conversational
activities to improve their oral/aural competency, as
well as grammar exercises and cultural presentations.
Not open to students with 2 years high school German
or 1 year college German, with A or B within past
3 years. (CSU)
GERM 50B Conversation for Beginners
3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Prerequisite:
Completion of German 50A or equivalent. Not open to native
speakers of German. Not open to students with two years of
high school German or one year of college German with A or
B grade within the past three years. Recommended:

A high-beginning/low intermediate oral
communication course designed to improve those
listening and speaking skills needed for cross-cultural
understanding in social, academic and work-related

Introduction to basic physical and biological sciences,
including chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology,
microbiology, metric system and basic biomath.

HLC 55 Medical Microbiology
4 units/3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. Grade only.
Prerequisite: Completion of CHEM60 or higher chemistry
course, and completion of BIO10 or higher biology course.
Concepts of classification, physiology, pathogenesis
and prevention of human diseases caused by bacteria,
fungi, protozoa and viras specific to nursing science.
Emphasis on prevention of nosocomial infections,
immunity, theories of diagnosis, treatment and
nursing support. Laboratory training in cultivation,
identification, and diagnosis. (For Health Sciences
students only) (CSU)
May be taken for a total of 2 times.
HLC 56 Applied Transcultural Health Care
4 units/11.5 hours lecture, 34 hours by arrangement for 3
weeks. CR/NC option. Prerequisite: Health care student or
health care professional.
This course will allow the student an immersion
experience in transcultural health care. Sites may
vary from year to year. The student will explore
various aspects of health care while living and
working in another country. Theory will focus on
health related beliefs and practices, cultural sensitivity
and diversity. Health and illness across the life
continuum from birth to death will be explored.
Additionally, child rearing practices, transcultural
communications while working in various health
care settings will be discussed. Clinical experiences
will focus on care of women and children, growth and
development, immunizations, client and community
assessments, screening, teaching and prevention.
Clinical sites will include: hospitals, outpatient
clinics, childrens orphanage, and selected
community development projects in both the rural
and urban areas. (CSU)
HLC 60 Medical Terminology
3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Recommended: Health
Sciences majors; eligibility for English 100A or equiv.
Acquisition of basic medical terminology relevant to
anatomy, pathology, diagnostic procedures,
treatments, drug classifications, abbreviations.
Focus is on basic structure of medical terms the
ability to analyze synthesize parts of words. Ability
to utilize principles of medical word building is
emphasized. (CSU)
