AJ 55 Criminal Procedures
3 units/3 hours lecture. Grade only.
Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 100.
A comprehensive examination of the
origin, development, philosophy, and legal
basis of criminal procedures in California.
Procedural, statute law, case law,
constitutional law and judicial rules governing
pre-arrest, arrest, custody, crime charging,
motions, applicable rules of discovery and
evidence, California grand jury system,
pretrial court procedures, adult and juvenile
court procedures, verdict, sentencing, and
the appellate process. (CSU)
AJ 56 Crime and Criminal Justice in Society
3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100 or 100A.
A critical examination of the nature and
extent of crime in contemporary society and
the social, legal and political responses to
criminal and delinquent behavior. Does not
apply to Administration of Justice majors.

AJ 59 Criminal Justice Pre-Employment
Preparation
3 units/3 hours lecture. Grade only. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100 or 100A.
This course is designed to evaluate,
counsel and prepare students to satisfactorily
complete law enforcement pre-employment
testing. Additionally, to prepare students
intending to enter any of the Public Safety
state-mandated training courses. Testing
and evaluation will include, but not be limited
to, written exams, oral boards, physical agility
requirements, firearms training and technical
driving skills. (CSU)

NC only. Prerequisite: Completion of or current

AJ 63 Patrol Procedures
3 units/3 hours lecture. Grade only. Prerequisite:
Completion of AJ 50. Recommended: Eligibility
for ENGL 100A or ENGL 100.
The course involves an examination of the
philosophy, principles, and practices of
community policing as well as the
responsibilities, techniques and methods of
police patrol. Emphasis is placed on strategies
designed to engage and assist a community in
the development and implementation of
solutions to police-related problems.
Operations, supervision, professionalism,
ethics and leadership within the context of
contemporary policing are studied. (CSU)
AJ 70 Introduction to Corrections
3 units/3 hours lecture. Grade only. Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 100A or ENGL 100.
This course is designed to provide the
student with an overview of the history and
trends of adult and juvenile corrections including
probation and parole. It will focus on the legal
issues, specific laws and general operation of
correctional institutions. The relationship between corrections and other components of
the judicial system will also be examined. (CSU)
AJ 71 Correctional Interviewing Counseling
3 units/3 hours lecture. Grade only. Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 100A or ENGL 100.
This course is an overview of the
techniques in counseling and interviewing
available to practitioners in Corrections. The
student will learn the use of appropriate
techniques and theories in confidence
building which may be used by the
correctional employee in client interviews and
counseling. A basic course for students
planning to enter or already employed within
the Correctional Science field. (CSU)
AJ 98 Special Studies in Administration of Justice
1-3 units/up to 9 hours by arrangement. Grade
only. Prerequisite: Application to department
and completion of AJ 21. Recommended:
Eligibility for ENGL 100A or ENGL 100.
Seminars or individual conferences by
arrangement to provide for independent study
and enriched academic experience. (CSU)
Independent study including 49 and 98 courses
- 6 unit total.
AJ 99I Admin of Justice Occupational Work
Experience Internship
0.5-8 units/up to 40 hours by arrangement.
Grade only. Recommended: Eligibility for English
100 or 100A. Limits on enrollment: Student must
complete an application, interview, placement
and verification of employment because intern
position must be secured prior to enrollment.
Administration of Justice Occupational
Work Experience internship is supervised
employment of students that extends
classroom learning to the job site and relates
to the students educational or occupational
goal. The Intern Program is for students who
have declared a major, have taken classes in
the major, and are ready for on-the-job
experience in a paid or unpaid position.
Students will acquire new knowledge, skills,
and abilities to prepare for a career in their
chosen field. May be repeated for a total of 16
units or 4 semesters. Must be enrolled in 7
units including Intern units for fall and spring
semesters. Summer semester requires Intern
units and one other course. (CSU)
May be taken for a total of 16 units or up to 4
enrollments.
