219 www.santarosa.edu Santa Rosa Junior College 2004 -2005 Catalog ENGR 10 Introduction to the Engineering Profession 1.5 units/2.4 hours lecture for 10 weeks. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 100A; OR eligibility for ENGL 100. Non-mathematical introduction to the field of engineering. Students research and discuss the role of engineering and technology in society, and the expectations and experiences of engineers in academia industry. Group activities, assignments, and interaction are emphasized. Course focuses on information technology as a way to assist in making informed decisions about career paths, majors, and schools. Course also includes information regarding engineering transfer requirements and coursework expectations. Job hunting skills such as networking, resume writing, and interviewing are explored. A short oral presentation will be required. Field trips and guest speakers augment student information gathering. (CSU/UC) ENGR 16 Electric Circuits Devices 4 units/3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. Grade only. Prerequisite: PHYS 4C completed or in progress and MATH 2B completed or in progress. Fundamental principles of engineering circuit analysis and an introduction to the theory and use of common electronic devices. Subjects covered include node and loop analysis, circuit simplification techniques, natural and forced response, op amp behavior and circuits, semiconductor theory and behavior, transistor biasing, modeling, small signal analysis, and digital circuits. Mathematical concepts reviewed and applied include: matrices and determinants, binary and hexa-decimal numbers, Fourier and Laplace transforms, complex numbers and phasors. Lab will be selected from those topics in the above list not duplicated in the Physics 4C (Electricity and Magnetism). Students are required to have a graphing calculator. (CSU/UC) CAN ENGR 6 ENGR 25 Engineering Graphics and Design 3 units/2.5 hours lecture, 1.5 hours laboratory. Grade only. Prerequisite: MATH 27 (formerly MATH 57) with a grade of C or better. Recommended: Completion of APTECH 56. Basic principles of engineering graphics including: orthographic projection, descriptive geometry, and geometric tolerancing are introduced with an emphasis on solutions to mechanical and civil engineering problems in three dimensional space. AutoCAD coverage emphasizes 3D solid modeling, but includes 2Dcommandsandworkingdrawingsinaproject and oral presentation format. Engineering group design processes are introduced and applied using design contests. (CSU/UC) CAN ENGR 2 ENGR 34 Statics 3 units/3 hours lecture. Grade only. Corequisite: Physics 4A (Completed or in progress) A vectorial treatment of the principles of statics with application to engineering problems and an emphasis on common engineering computational tools. Students are required to have a graphing calculator. (CSU/UC) CAN ENGR 8 ENGR 45 Properties of Materials 4 units/3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. Grade only. Prerequisite: CHEM 1A or CHEM 4A and PHYS 4A. Structure, properties, selection, utilization, and deterioration of engineering materials. (CAN ENGR 4) (CSU/UC) CAN ENGR 4 ENGR 49 Special Studies in Engineering 1-3 units/up to 9 hours by arrangement. Grade only. Prerequisite: Application to department. Seminars or individual conferences by arrangement to provide for independent study and enriched academic experience. (CSU/UC) Independent study including 49 and 98 courses - 6 unit total. English ENGL 1A Reading Composition 4 units/4 hours lecture. Grade only. Prerequisite: ENGL 100B or ENGL 100 Critical reading and discussion of works in various literary forms. Composition predominantly of reasoned and reflective prose. An introduction to literature that emphasizes critical reading, discussion and analytic writing about works representative of fiction, poetry, drama, and literary criticism. Elements of the novel form: narration, point of view, structure, plot, character, and metaphorical language, as well as themes introduced through reading and discussion of outstanding novels. Study of the nature, variety and significance of poetry: a studious pursuit of what makes poems work, why they are valued, and how to enjoy them fully. A critical reasoning and advanced composition course designed to develop critical reading, thinking and writing skills beyond the level achieved in English 1A.
