Prerequisite: Completion of SPAN 50C, SPAN 2 or SPAN 3 with a grade of C or better. A high-intermediate oral communication course designed to improve those listening and speaking skills needed for successful interaction in social, academic, or work-related situations. Emphasis on finding, getting and keeping a job in the U.S. and communicating more effectively in social and academic contexts. (CSU) May be taken for a total of 18 units. SPAN 70 Beginning Spanish for Health Occupations 3 units/3 hours lecture, 1 hour by arrangement. CR/NC option. Prerequisite: Employed in a health-related occupation, related field, or an active volunteer health occupation worker, or employed in SRJC Health Sciences program and completion of SPAN 50A or SPAN 1 or SPAN 2 with a grade of C or better. Recommended: Eligibility for English 100 or 100A. Development of health occupation-related communication skills through Spanish language activities and exercises relevant to the workplace. (CSU) Course exempt from repeat provisions. Special Education SE 270 Creative Process for Self-Awareness 2 units/1 hour lecture, 2 hours laboratory. CR/ NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 100A or ENGL 100. Intensive experiential course in the creative arts processes, focusing on art as a tool for self-discovery. Using art journal keeping, media exploration, and group discussion, the course will explore creativity theories, the field of art therapy and ways to develop creative potential. Emphasis placed on applying techniques to personal and professional situations. May be taken for a total of 4 units. SE 285A Developmental Movement I 3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 100A or ENGL 100. Study of the analysis of locomotor, gross and fine motor movement; how to assess and remediate these movements. Prepare students to test and analyze individual movements, such as gross and fine motor, coordination, balance, perceptual motor, agility, laterality and directionality and self-image, to learn remedial movement programs that help overcome movement disabilities and to become tutors in the Movement Laboratory. May be taken for a total of 6 units. SE 285B Developmental Movement II (Formerly SE 235B) 3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/ NC option. Study of motor proficiency test battery, how to administer tests, analyze results, and administer remedial movement programs. This course prepares junior college students to test and analyze individual movements, such as gross and fine motor, coordination, balance, perceptual-motor, agility, laterality and directionality, and self image, and to learn remedial movement programs that help overcome movement disabilities and learning disabilities; and become tutors in the Movement Laboratory. May be taken for a total of 6 units. SE 285C Developmental Movement Practicum (Formerly SE 235C) 2 units/2 hours lecture. CR/ NC option. Prerequisite: SE 285A SE 285B (formerly SE 235B). Continuation of Developmental Movement l ll culminating in administration of remedial movement programs. May be taken for a total of 6 units. Speech SPCH 1A Introduction to Speech 3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for Engl 1A. The study of public speaking. Improves students ability to prepare, organize and deliver a speech and to evaluate critically various forms of communication. (CSU/UC) AA/AS area B; CSU area A1; IGETC area 1C; CAN SPCH 4 SPCH 2 Introduction to Oral Interpretation 3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Recommended: Completion of Engl 1A or equivalent. Experiencing literature through reading and oral interpretation of prose, poetry and drama. Theory and practice in the art and technique of exploring, illuminating and orally presenting the logical, emotional, and aesthetic meanings of creative literature. (CSU/UC) AA/AS area E; CSU area C2 SPCH 3A Introduction to Argumentation 3 units/3 hours lecture for 16 weeks. CR/NC option. Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 1A or completion of ENGL 100B or ENGL 100. Through in-class debates on contemporary issues, the course teaches how to make a claim and how to support it, how to recognize invalid arguments and how to refute them, how to reason and speak clearly. These techniques are useful in both formal and informal situations. (CSU/UC) AA/AS area B; CSU area A3; CAN SPCH 6 SPCH 9 Critical Thinking and Argumentation 3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Prerequisite: Completion of Engl 1A or equivalent. Primary emphasis on argumentation as the study of analysis, evidence, reasoning, refutation and rebuttal, etc., in oral and written communication. Significant component of instruction in written argumentation, with special attention to the essay form. Critical thinking approaches to commercial, legal, political, and academic argumentation and persuasion.
