THEATRE
SCRIPPS COLLEGE
The department presents several major productions each year. Student performers and
production personnel are drawn from majors and non-majors alike from all five colleges.
Requirements for the Major
Theatre majors may choose a general theatre emphasis, performance emphasis, design
emphasis, dramaturgy emphasis (history, criticism, theory, and dramatic literature), or directing
emphasis.
1. Core Courses:
TH 1. Introduction to Acting, or TH 3.Acting for (Non) Actors.
TH 2.Visual Arts of the Theatre.
TH 13. Corporeal Mime (half course), or TH 19.Fundamentals of Kabuki (half course), or
Dance 150. Exploration of Cultural Style (half course).
TH 20A or 20B.Theatre Crafts.
Dance 76. Modern Dance I or equivalent course.
Three of the Theatre History 115 series
TH 190. Senior Seminar, and TH 191.Senior Thesis (half course).
In addition, all majors must complete four crew assignments. Cumulative credit is available
as TH 52.Theatre Production.
2. Additional Required Courses:
a. General Theatre Emphasis: Completion of all core courses listed above plus four crew
assignments.TH 191. Senior Thesis must be taken as full credit.
b. Performance Emphasis: TH 12. Intermediate Acting;TH 17. Make-up (half course); any
three courses in the Studio Acting TH 100 series; and TH 192. Senior Project in Performance.
c. Design Emphasis: TH 17. Make-up (half course);TH 20A or TH 20B.Theatre Crafts,
(whichever one was not taken as part of core requirements);TH 80. Set Design;TH 81.
Costume Design;TH 82. Lighting Design;TH 193. Senior Project in Design; and TH 199.
Special Projects in Theatre (half course).
d. Dramaturgy Emphasis: Any three of the TH 115. History series not already taken as part
of core requirements;TH 130. Introduction to Directing;TH 140.Writing for the Stage; and
TH 194. Senior Project in Dramaturgy.
e. Directing Emphasis: TH 130. Introduction to Directing;TH 12. Intermediate Acting;
one of the following design courses:TH 80. Set Design,TH 81. Costume Design, or TH 82.
Lighting Design;TH 140.Writing for the Stage or one additional TH 115 series (History);
TH 195. Senior Project in Directing; and TH 199 Special Projects in Theatre (half-course).
Stage manage a major production. In spring semester of junior year, student must present a
portfolio for approval.
Academic credit is available for students involved in performance and/or production activities
under faculty supervision. (See TH 51.Theatre Performance and/or TH 52.Theatre Production).
Students majoring in theatre are expected to participate actively in the departmental
production program, which normally includes four major productions, a dance concert, and a
number of student-directed productions.Theatre majors are also expected to attend the workshops, lectures, and other events sponsored from time to time by the department as part of their
extra-curricular enrichment.Alexander Technique, an important aid in actor voice and movement
training, is required as a lab for TH 12. Intermediate Acting and most Studio 100 courses.
Pre-enrollment
Due to limited space, written permission is required for enrollment in all theatre courses.
Signed permission slips may be obtained in the theatre office from the theatre department secretary
or course instructor beginning the week of pre-enrollment.
