The Writing Program Prior to graduation, each Scripps student must be able to read a variety of interdisciplinary and literary texts proficiently and to express herself with precision, clarity, and nuance in writing and in speech.The required Writing 50 course focuses upon close reading, critical inquiry and analysis to encourage students increasingly sophisticated comprehension of texts. In turn, these analytical skills facilitate the students ability to articulate her own ideas cogently and compellingly. Each student writes and revises short essays as well as a research paper demonstrating her formulation of a persuasive and logical argument. Course Descriptions 50. Critical Analysis. Writing 50 is required of all first-year students. Each Writing 50 section emphasizes the revision process requiring several drafts of all short essays and at least one draft towards the final research paper.The Writing 50 sections are small about 15 students in each.The class size creates an environment wherein students are expected to participate actively in discussion, preparing students for serious and thoughtful oral as well as written communication. Minimum passing grade for this course is C (not including C-). Offered annually.Staff. 100. Advanced Writing. Advanced writing is an intensive course designed to further enhance students use of rhetorical strategies.Through sequential critical and analytical assignments, students develop a consciousness of language and become competent and confident with the use of an academic voice. Students have the opportunity to write first-person essays in addition to short research papers.The revision process, peer collaboration and review contribute to the students success in writing about complex issues and ideas clearly and convincingly.
