tentative itinerary for israel day 1 depart we depart with air canada for tel aviv day 2 tel aviv upon arrival we transfer to our hotel the balance of the day is at leisure until this evening’s welcome dinner day 3 caesarea haifa tel aviv we first visit caesarea the roman capital of judea and now an important archaeological site where we see the remains of the roman amphitheatre aqueduct hippodrome and the crusader s city then we proceed to haifa israel s largest port where we visit the famous bahai gardens and shrine and the carmelite church of stella maris where the prophet elisha is said to be buried we then visit a druze village to learn about this unique minority and experience their traditional hospitality in a family home we return to tel aviv for our dinner and overnight day 4 tel aviv jerusalem our city tour shows us modern tel aviv and its lovely seafront promenade we tour old jaffa and walk through the ancient streets the restored artist s quarter the central plaza and the franciscan monastery of st peter included is a visit of the museum of diaspora a multi-media depiction of the history of the jewish people after our tour we continue to jerusalem for a 4-night stay day 5 jerusalem our tour of jerusalem s old city begins at the mount of olives for spectacular views over the city we visit the garden of gethsemane and church of all nations and visit mt zion to see the room of the last supper and tomb of king david we will walk through the winding streets to david s tower the church of the holy sepulchre burial place of jesus and the via dolorosa his path to the crucifixion there will be free time to shop in the old city bazaars or relax at one of the coffee houses day 6 bethlehem jerusalem this morning we visit bethlehem and the church of the nativity where pilgrims have come for centuries to see the manger of jesus birth then we visit the israel museum and the shrine of the book that houses the dead sea scrolls later we enjoy a special “shabbat” evening including a festive homemade shabbat dinner and ceremony hosted by a jewish family day 7 jerusalem further touring of jerusalem brings us to the hadassah complex to view the impressive chagall windows we then continue to visit yad vashem israel’s holocaust museum where we will walk along the avenue of the righteous and see the children s pavilion on the way back to the hotel we will drive through mea shearim for a glimpse of the ultra-orthodox area day 8 galilee nazareth tiberius we proceed to nazareth where jesus spent his boyhood and visit joseph s workshop and the basilica of the annunciation then we drive through the jordan valley to tiberius for a 3-night stay day 9 safed tiberias we visit safed the centre of jewish mysticism perched on a hill in the galilee this holy city has an artist’s quarter set in a maze of quaint cobbled streets next we visit banias nature reserve to see the beautiful waterfalls before ascending mt bental for a panoramic view of the golan heights we also visit the city of qazrin and stop at the modern olive oil mill day 10 sea of galilee capernaum acre tiberias we take a boat ride on the sea of galilee and see the mount of beatitudes where jesus delivered three significant speeches we stop at capernaum where jesus stayed during his ministry and then tabgha to visit the church mosaics and site of the bread and fishes miracle our final visit today is to the picturesque old city of acre which features islamic minarets domes crusader remains and an arab market day 11 massada dead sea we drive through the jordan valley to the dead sea passing qumran where the dead sea scrolls were found following the shores of the dead sea we arrive at masada it was here at the site of herod the great s palace that the jewish zealots held off the roman army for three years before committing mass suicide we ascend by cable car to tour the ruins and take in the breathtaking views we overnight by the dead sea day 12 dead sea eilat a morning at leisure to enjoy a relaxing soak in the dead sea this afternoon we journey through the negev desert to the beach resort town of eilat day 13 petra eilat we cross in to jordan and visit the fascinating rose city of petra considered the “8th wonder of the ancient world” we first pass through the siq an immense crack in the sandstone and then follow a winding fissure between overhanging cliffs that seem to meet overhead we see petra s most impressive monument the treasury and hundreds of temples tombs and the roman theatre lunch is included after our visit we return to eilat day 14 tel aviv we first stop at the amazing ramon crater and then at the bedouin visitors centre for a presentation about this desert-dwelling arab ethnic tribe we continue to tel aviv day 15 tel aviv a day at leisure to further explore this exciting city enjoy a stroll along the lively boardwalk or spend the day at the beach this evening is our farewell dinner day 16 home we transfer to the airport for our flight home direct non-stop to toronto 65.
