WESTERN NEVADA COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2006-2007 www.wncc.edu COT 216: INTERMEDIATE WORD PROCESSING 3 credits. Prerequisite: COT 150B or equivalent. 40 WPM recommended. Assists students who have completed a beginning word process ing class. Applies advanced features of merge and sort, macros, tables, math, document assembly and font and graphic enhance ments. COT 217B: OFFICE PUBLICATIONS 1-3 credits. Prerequisite: COT 150B, COT 200, COT 216 or COT 222. Introduces students to basic techniques of desktop publishing and web page publishing in an of ce environment using Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft FrontPage applications. Students will learn how to plan and design a publication, format text, work with art, use styles and work with multiple pages. Course will also cover the creation and maintenance of simple web sites, including using links, table, frames and forms. COT 222: DESKTOP PUBLISHING WITH WORD PROCESSING 1-3 credits. Prerequisite: COT 150B, or consent of instructor. Presents an overview of desktop publishing concepts and ap plications using desktop software. Students will learn to import word processed les and graphics, and use menus /commands and printers to produce newsletters, brochures, iers and reports on computer. COT 223: ADVANCED DESKTOP PUBLISHING 3 credits. Prerequisite: COT 222 or IS 101 or consent of instructor. Teaches a page layout desktop publishing program such as Page - Maker, InDesign or QuarkXPress. Students create computer graph ics, select and set type, design and assemble pages, and import text and graphics les to produce effective printed materials such as newsletters, forms, brochures, manuals and presentations using laser printer technology. COT 239B: ADVANCED LEGAL TRANSCRIPTION 3 credits. Prerequisite: COT 123 or equivalent. Teaches students to operate the transcribing machine and to for mat legal correspondence and documents directly from dictation into mailable form. Legal correspondence and documents will be transcribed for legal cases, each relating to a different area of law. Cases have been gathered from actual law of ce les. Students will work on cases from onset through conclusion. COT 262: INTERMEDIATE SPREADSHEETS CONCEPTS 1-3 credits. Prerequisite: IS 101 or consent of instructor. Studies the concepts and capabilities of computer spreadsheet sys tems. Teaches command and macro generation. Students gain ex perience generating spreadsheet templates, graphs and macros as business problem-solving tools. When offered for variable credit, content will be divided as follows: A) Concepts and capabilities of the computer spreadsheet with spreadsheet generation; B) Experi ence with the user-level menu access of the software, including graphing; C) More advanced capabilities of database and macro generation. COT 266: INTERMEDIATE DATABASE CONCEPTS 1-3 credits. Prerequisite: IS 201 or consent of instructor. Covers concepts and capabilities of microcomputer database systems management. Teaches the command and programming language of a typical system, together with speci c experience in creating and using databases in typical applications. Includes both lecture and lab assignments. When offered in variable credit format, content will be divided as follows: A) Concepts and bilities of database systems management with exploration of levels of database software; B) User level access to many of standard capabilities and menus of the software; C) More dif cult capabilities with programming of the database software. COT 299B: INDEPENDENT STUDY IN COMPUTER OFFICE TECHNOLOGY 1-6 credits. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Available to students who have completed most core and major requirements and have a grade point average. Contact instructor for application, screening and required skills evaluation. Up to six semester hour credits may be on the basis of 75 hours of internship for one credit. May be up to six credits . Applies knowledge and skills to real, on-the-job situations in a program designed by a company of cial and a faculty advisor maximize learning experiences. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS DEPARTMENT CODE: CA Applied science and technology customized applications courses are designed to t speci c needs in business and industry. ci c customized classes may be found in the latest WNCC schedule. CA 100B: INTRODUCTION TO PERSONAL COMPUTING .5 credits. Prerequisite: none. Teaches how a computer works, along with a complete explana tion of hardware and software terminology. Short ghands-onh ex ercises in DOS, Windows, word processing, spreadsheets, and base management will provide an overview of todayfs business application software. A great class for novices! 8-hour class. CA 101B: INTRODUCTION TO MS WINDOWS .5 credits. Prerequisite: none. Introduces the Windows elements and its functions: Program Manager, which operates programs and creates group windows with program icons; File manager, which uses the DOS directory structure to sort, move, delete, copy, and select les, format and the Control Panel, which set screen colors, date and time mats, and communication with printers and fonts. CA 102B: INTRODUCTION TO WORD PROCESSING .5 credits. Prerequisite: none. Teaches the student how to create, save, print, and reopen processing documents. Learn the fundamentals of page layout, fonts, justi cation, formatting, tables, margins, tabs, indents, head ers, footers, page numbers, and graphics.
